    The email says:

Just to let you know your savings account is now open.
It’ll normally take 2 days to show on the Internet Bank but the good news is, you’ll start earning interest from today.

I am closing the account and opening a new one to ensure I get the 5% for another year.

It is a variable interest rate, so will more than likely reduce during the term.

    "5.00% gross p.a./AER (variable).

Interest is calculated daily and paid annually on the anniversary of account opening and on closure."

Can Nationwide change the interest rate?

Yes, the interest rate is variable. This means we have the ability to change the interest rate. Please see the ‘Interest’ section in the Savings General terms and conditions which sets out when we can vary the interest rate and how we will notify you if this happens.

Account matured on the 1st. Still no interest. Complained on Saturday by phone. Just had a call from the complaints team offering £20 compensation which I have accepted. Promised the £20 will be credited to my current account within two days.

They still cannot say when the interest will be credited for the savings account, but confirmed that it will be paid out if I close the account. Off to town to do that today.

    This can be done online.

Thanks, but I was told if I do it on line it will take up to three days!

I am unable to do this for the matured account.

The 'Close account' function under the 'other account services' options is another part of the website which does not work properly.

    How did you close yours?

Yeah I saw that at the time.

'Closed the account online with NW caller' makes little sense to me.

Did you do it over the phone or online in the end?

Thanks for that but I would still rather have 5% for a few months than .5% anytime.
