I would be sympathetic to your point of view if I thought the NHS was doing everything it could to get those who are mobile but in pain fixed up enough to be able to walk around without any pain. Sadly, particularly in England, this doesn't seem to be the case. A bit better in Scotland - if you are working age and need a new knee or hip, it's got to be done and dusted up here within 18 weeks. But try getting a new knee or hip in a place like Yorkshire. Some of their trusts have all kinds of excuses why you can't have one. Too young (54), overweight (a load of tosh - up here you can be morbidly obese and still have a successful knee or hip replacement), having more than one health condition, no more funding for that year. Osteoarthritis is a horrible thing to have. I don't begrudge those who are crippled by it and can't get the help they need from the NHS a penny of either their PiP/DLA or their blue badge.
As to blue badge holders still having to walk miles to their destination, that suggests not enough parking for disabled people. I've certainly been to towns where the parking for disabled people was so poor it was a joke. I wonder what state those poor people are in once they get home. It probably takes a few days for their joints to recover.0 -

I agree, I have problems because of my hips and knees, not overweight but have other problems too. I've been told there's no point even referring me to a consultant because all they can offer is replacement and as I am 52, I'm too young. There's no other treatment apparently (and I'm pretty sure this isn't true either). This was last year, and I read within weeks that Eamon Holmes had paid for a private replacement (he was 54 at the time). So if its a bad idea to have hip/knee replacements so early, how come you can have them if you pay (if it was a bad idea, I'd expect its a bad idea whether you can pay or not)? And he's far more overweight lol.0 -
Apart from hips and knees there are others who are in pain when walking for which there is no cure, or walking a distance which would have a detrimental effect on their health a day or two following. These are situations that would look as if the person had no problem walking but infact do.
For sure, not just arthritis sufferers. What about people with MS? Or with a heart defect, or muscular dystrophy? Also, some diseases can just leave people too weak, too exhausted, to walk very far. So no direct physical impairment to their walking function. Such as? Say hello to cancer.0 -

Too young is a ridiculous excuse to deny people replacement knees and hips. If football players can get them in their 30s why not non celebrities in their 50s? Yes, you may need another one in 20 years time, but so what?0 -
To be honest if I am around in my 70's to need another replacement, I'd have a rather major celebration lol. I think I am going back to my GP.0

But I do expect tax evaders to be caught and punished. It's a very gentile description, is "fraud". These people are thieves. Full stop. Unfortunately those thieves could give the gov't an excuse to audit and freeze bank accounts of
the genuine taxpayers So genuine taxpayers suffer. And that won't change whilst the thieves get away with a slap on the wrist and 10p a week repayment.
.
There you go! Expanded it a little for you;)
I can guarantee more tax evasion goes on every day on the street you live on and in your work place than gets paid out in Disability so why don't you direct your righteous anger toward the real problem instead weakly trying to justify your own entitlement?
No one challenges it though do they? No one ever turns round and says 'You know that £50 a week cash in hand you boast about earning. . well that's 2.5K a year you should be paying tax on . . ' It's always going to be 'See that bloke with the BB - he looks fine to me. Bloody scrounger!!'0 -
Pain or discomfort does not or should not entitle you to have a mobility car, theres thousands or millons got pain & discomfort.
.
That old chestnut! :rotfl::rotfl:
I'll chuck in pain and depression too just to get you really frothing! Did you know some of the points needed to get BB can come from being a bit tired and bit down?:D:D
Like Nanny, I rarely use my BB for parking - I've used it twice at work and received such a backlash, my managers had to step in! Luckily though, 'work' was privvy to a lot more info than the unenlightened masses AND I'm protected in the workplace from bullying and assumption.:T:T
I don't have to waste my time explaining to untrained medical no-marks why I needed to park in a disabled bay prior to starting a 12 shift! Or that I'm using my BB for cheap train and venue tickets for a day out in December - I just call it bonus!!:T:T0 -
i have no qualms about the genuine people in our society that need help with various benefits. But why dont they put lists up in the townhall of the people who are on these benefits so they are open for anyone to see to see.
I think you would see a lot of the genuine fraudsters dont want to see their names highlighted in the town hall, i see them walking around my town on pip the higher rate & they are walking perfectly ok, because they think that people dont know about it , im pretty sure i wouldnt want my name up on the town hall wall unless i was really genuine.
I am on ESA and DLA, but I do not wish for the whole of my town to know, what with preconceived ideas of people on benefits nowadays and the fact my health is none of their business unless I care to tell them about it.
I am transferring to PIP, as it stands I do get high rate DLA mobility, I do not lease the car though nor do I even have a blue badge. I can walk, however I cannot walk without excessive pain throughout my body. Then after I have walked, even a small way I am in agony and cannot move for hours or days afterwards. I also collapse randomly, at any time, sometimes when I am out.
I look young and well, if you was to just look at me you would think I was very healthy, I very slim and look well, so you can imagine what people would think if they knew I get ESA and DLA. But looks are deceiving.
It is not my whole towns business what I get, I feel bad enough about my own life, without every other person passing judgement on me too.0 -
This is getting altogether too personal. It isn't your job to decide whether people on here are entitled to disability benefits. And you are simply showing your ignorance when you assume that all people with disabilities can't walk. My mobility is extremely bad but I wouldn't trade my eyesight to get it back for one minute. Disability isn't as simple as "can't walk". I am all for rooting out the thieves. But actually, I am also all for increasing disability benefits that keep people in poverty. And in case you think I'm just trying to feather my nest - despite my disability I don't claim a single benefit because I do not need to - I would be equally happy for monetary disability benefits to be means tested throughout. And getting a blue badge is not as easy as you appear to think. I cannot walk a single step without crutches, and even with them, my progress is slow, painful and limited to short distances. Despite that I got turned down and had to fight for it - to keep myself in work so that I didn't need to claim benefits!!!
It is this kind of irrational anger about people with disabilities that fuels the worst of the system.
I had this problem. I got the impression, if you don't want to claim DLA/PiP, that the default position is to turn down all requests for a blue badge in the first instance, however valid. It's like they are saying if you can't get DLA/PiP, then you aren't eligible for a blue badge. Which is silly, because as you say there would be plenty of disabled people who don't claim DLA/PiP because they can afford not to.0
