MSE News: How to beat the latest TalkTalk price hikes

  • Despite calling TalkTalk within 30 days of receiving the email informing of the price rises they have sent me a letter stating it will cost £44 to leave them and that if there is anything in the letter I disagree with to contact them. Is this just a ruse on their part to get you to ring them so they can try to persuade you to stay one final time as the initial email clearly says you can leave penalty free?
Yes - I ended up complaining to the CEO's office to get the issue resolved. Never again.

I received the notification email tonight. If I understand it correctly everyone is being placed on a new 18 month fixed price contract and new prices from 01 December unless they opt out or cancel their whole service "without charge or penalty" by calling TalkTalk:
If you don’t want to take a Fixed Low Price Plan and would like to change or cancel anything without charge or penalty, call us on 0345 172 0046 within 30 days of receiving this email.

w00t: I'm getting rid of TalkTalk by cancelling my contract early which I actually took up in a moment of madness! But where to from here?

After today's all round inclusive price con, your choices are severely limited.

The market is still fundamentally very competitive, so the likelihood is that better rates will return.

    Not true:

New fixed contract over 18 months is £27
Old contract until Aug '17 at new prices is £37.95
But if I switch to the new fixed tariff I lose 4 months of free fibre broadband at the new price of £19.00 per month.

I'd say TalkTalk are attempting to con me into a new 18 months contract for little reward.

Vodaphone unlimited fibre 38 mb/s over an 18 months contract is £25 per month including line rental. Broadband connection fee of £49.

Plusnet unlimited fibre 38 mb/s over an 18 months contract is £27.50 per month including line rental with free broadband connection. I get the free Hub One router which has 4 gigabit wired ports which the TalkTalk super router doesn't have as well as AC wireless which the TalkTalk super router has.

Overall, not a lot of difference between Vodaphone and Plusnet. I just like the Plusnet TV ad.

So it's a case of bye-bye TalkTalk and hey there Plusnet. Can't wait to get on the phone to Talk Talk tomorrow :D

I've just called TT and they say that as I pay my line rental up front, and my package is "free" there will be no increase. I don't believe them as I was under the impression that they add a discount of £7.50 to the monthly amount of £7.50 to get zero. If it goes to £9 I would owe them £1.50.

The advisor was adamant that it would still be free, meaning I can't cancel till June :(

That's my TalkTalk done in but not dusted yet. The last person I spoke to said it was being cancelled and I would receive email confirmation which will include details of my final payment. He said that there would be no fees connected with my exit stage right.

Now I have to enrol with my new provider when I get the email from TalkTalk. No email arrived yet.

Overall 18m 53s and spoke to two people.

They told me the same thing. In my case, the increase would have been limited just to the increase in Line Rental, £1.25, because everything else was discounted off.

In the end, I stayed with them at £25pm new 18 month Fibre BB, with a line speed guarantee and new router. On the basis of the new rates across the industry, that seems okay.

I hope someone can answer my basic question:o

If I agree to a new contract and receive a router, will I still be able to use my old pc that runs vista and doesn't have wifi capability?

The "Super Router" still has a set of 4 Ethernet ports.

Also, I've been able to configure it to use my old TT Router as a switch, so that's another possibility.

I don't think you get a new router when you agree to a new contract per se unless perhaps you're upgrading from ADSL to Fibre.

The TT super router for Fibre, Huawei HG633, has 4 x 10/100 Ethernet ports and AC wireless which is backward compatible to earlier standards. Your old computer will probably be able to connect to it since apart from AC wireless and dual bands, it's based on old technology. Maybe it should be called the TT Frankenrouter :D
