    hi,

iam a student currently in my final yr. would u lot advise that i shud buy shares in northern rock as the share price is dropping. i could potetentially make thousands of pounds if i use x amount of my student loan.

You could potentially loose a lot of your student loan too. If you cant afford to loose it dont !

  • just say u had £10000 u can afford to lose. would u invest and buy shares from nrk. I have been looking at thier past performance and their shares peaked at £12. if a buy real low and than a few yrs time nrk gets back to normal i could make lots of money.

Past performance is not an indication of future performance.

In fact, looking only at the past performance is a sign of an amateur at this game, and one who stands to lose a lot of money if they make the wrong decision. If your only reason for investing in a company that's doing badly now is because they've done well in the past, you shouldn't even think about investing. Invest because you think they have a sound business model, long term strategy and executive team, or because you have some other thoughts as to why they are going to make money for you.

I would suggest that you learn a lot more about this sort of activity before you get yourself in a position where you stand to lose money that you might have to spend years repaying. You are clearly out of your depth in this situation, which is more akin to (much riskier) speculating than regular investing.

  • Just because the share price was once £12 doesn't mean it is now cheap. The share price could go to £1 or close to zero. It happens all the time. GEC Marconi shares went from £20 to practically zero, Beware.
  • what is the basic rule of buying shares? it is buy low sell high which i am doing. i just want peoples opinion on if they will buy their shares or not. its unlikely nrk will go bust. takeover is likely but who knows. if a takeover happens i won't lose my money. dont u lot think this is risk free as the share price is quite low?

oh btw ive been hearing ppl making lots of money from nrk recently.

I'd go to Vegas and play the Tables for a night !!! If I had 10K i didn't care about losing it'd be far more fun putting it all on Black and watching the ball spin :money:

Im by no way the most qualified to answer this but im happy to respond, if you had bought yesterday for £10 000 how much would you have left tomorrow ?? those who bought since friday have beem loosing money, In 2004 MCI worldcoms shares plumeted from somewhere around $50 to lees than $1 .... you could by now at £2 and tomorrow morning wake to find your £10000 is worth £5000 or less. If £2 is such a good deal there would be firm offers for take over, i havent seen anything like this news on the TV so its safe to say the offer isnt there which tell you big business isnt ready to get involved yet, that should be a indicator to you that its more risky than the city is willing to touch.

I have a buy in at 99p for a amount im willing to kiss good bye to and havent had to borrow .. if you can say the same for your £10 000 then go for it. If I had £10 000 none borrowed money id be doing something a lot safer but thats me.

No. what you could be doing is buying low, and selling even lower, therby losing money. You're being blinded by the fact that the share price was once £12 and now £2 and so you think it must rise. It doesn't have to rise from its present level
