These shares are heading for 200p,the price which the rumours say that HBOS or HSBC MIGHT be willing to pay.

NR is a lame duck and will soon be like the dodo.

    200p here we come
    you read it here first.

if my memory serves me correct NR shares will be ex dividend after 26th september so unless their is some good news on NR front share price will lose the dividend factor. :(
  • I have just seen 186 offer (buy) price on my ticker

The Government threw an obstacle in the way of a Northern Rock recovery this morning after it refused to stand behind any new accounts opened from today.

which I think is fair enough, TBH. People know the situation and should only open accounts with NR if they feel comfortable with it. Existing account holders had the situation thrust upon them so a totally different scenario.

In addition, if it were extended to all new accounts as well it would give NR a distinct advantage over all its competitors in the savings market which surely can't be permitted.

Indeed, the guarantee of NR could contribute to a run on another wobbly bank, such as A+L. In the end, the BoE/govt would have to guarantee all the banks and if any were to go under, they would be crucified for losing so much of the taxpayers' money.
