  • hello i am new to this thread and indeed selling shares. i have been looking into buying and selling shares for a few months now. i did some background research and practiced without using my own money. perfect opportunity i thought with northern rock. i bought £2000 worth at 277. just shows what a pr1ck i am. although i did buy another £1000 worth at 180 this morning and sold them at 215 but still hurting a little. i think i have gone with it this far and the drop seems to be less dramatic the last few hours. plus i notice there has been a lot of big buys today and not a lot of big sells. i am hoping the rot has stopped. what are the people with experiance thinking about the situation as it stands now? i know its a very unstable stock and experianced people wouldn't have touched them.

    cheers

    remember its only money.
  • My advice to student200777 (apart from what's already been said!) would be to put a few shares (without buying them) you are interested in on a portfolio which updates every 15 minutes like www.iii.co.uk and get to know how those shares perform. Why don't you do this with Northern Rock and 'pretend' that you bought them, then you can see how certain shares perform. In the meantime, never use borrowed money to gamble (buying shares is a gamble), and listen to all the advice above.

When you start to buy shares (presumably when you've repaid your student loan), rather go into unit trusts (in an ISA wrapper) and spread the risk.

What I see here is either greed, or a desperate need for money (we've all been there!). I'm expert in this, having lost money in the dot. coms! I was 'making' £1000 in a week, and then went on holiday. When I returned, everything had collapsed! If you can't shrug your shoulders when this happens, don't go into it.

Good luck with it (if you're not a troll!)

  • i dont know mate and the general thing i have noticed is the people who know what they are doing wouldn't have touched them and, understandabaly, wont give you advice if you have done the right thing or not. i am new to the shares game but i made sure the money i messed with would not be missed (by that much anyway). i think its just a massive gamble the northern rock thing. i thing people who have put money they can't afford into it to get a fast buck back will end up skint very very quickly. i set a lower limit on my shares so i wont loose more than 50% of what i put in. lets just say i have learnt a massive lesson!!!!

    good luck
