You had to leave an old Saab in gear to get the ignition key out.

My old saab was so old the barrel for the key was so worn it would come out in any gear,
good luck getting better to the OP, I think it's only in the stunt movies that you can open the door, jump in and pull up the handbrake,

For all you nasty bunch this could have been very tragic. Accidents happen luckily you avoided serious injury and hope you get well soon. I hope the kids are fine I'm sure they where very traumatised.

Right so the young lad has managed to release the handbrake and you lot think he wouldn't have managed to then wiggle a gearstick around whilst playing....

Givingnop a bit of a hard time here. I'm betting a very small number of people would have done that whilst unloading shopping.

Although you should have moved out of the way rather than try stop it from behind but the benefit of hindsight is a lovely thing.

    Hope you recover soon!

How does 5 year old use the clutch to change gear as well as release handbrake?

I do hope that the OP recovers quickly and that the children aren't too traumatised - though, the 5 year old, may well be less likely to play with the handbrake now...

You don't need the clutch. If he has the strength to release a hand brake he can wiggle a gear lever.

I'm an auto driver, but did have lessons in a manual - though took the test in Auto, I was always taught that you need the clutch down to engage the gear.

Not when the car's stationary and the engine is not running.

... actually, it is possible to perform "clutchless changes" even whilst driving, but that's a different discussion ...

I would imagine the majority of drivers do not leave their car in gear when parked.
I only do if I'm parked on a noticeable slope... which is a few times a year if that. Do some of you routinely leave your car in gear then?
I need to think of something new here...
