is that all they have to eat ? my son would need 10 times that ! lol

Yep thats all they need really. On a friday I put something as a treat in like two squares of chocolate or a cereal bar. I do make flapjacks occasionally so that their lunch doesn't get too boring having the same stuff all the time.

I don't call it dinner either, i don't understand why schools call it dinner time or people call them dinners, they are not, the amount they get is just enough for a lunch.

To me dinner is after school when you make them things like shepherds pie etc

A lot of parents don't do their kids dinner after school, they say well they had dinner at school

£1.70 with Sodexho, who I work for as a dinner lady in the south east. I would strongly recommend you supply a packed lunch instead considering what the dinners are like

My kids have a few cubes of Melon, Pineapple and 4 Strawberrys each with a mini pitta bread stuffed with salad inside and a smoothie drink (I make my own going by the Innocent ones :D)

Are your children very young or have you got them on a diet? My DD (12) is a light eater but that wouldn't fill her up - she needs more protein. Now she has packed lunches in secondary school as the queues are too long for a hot meal. She misses them though as she was used to it. We have phases - at the moment its a chicken sandwich/roll everyday, a chunk of cucumber, a cereal/yougurt bar and a piece of fruit and a drink. She used to like to take a bowl of raspberries but she kept chucking the container and spoon in the bin by mistake:o so now it's an apple or banana.

Meal quality varies from LEA to LEA. In primary she had school dinners everyday from reception to Y6 and they were excellent. No GM products, local suppliers etc with a 2 week menu and they could choose fruit instead of pudding. I didn't think the portions were big enough to feed hungrier children but for DD they were fine. The biggest advantage of them was as other posters have said - it expands the variety of food she will eat as hunger is a great motivator for trying new foods.

Talking of Smoothies did anyone see the one show. I adore smoothies but they were going on about the amount of sugar (natural of course) and acid in them. They did a coin cleaning test and the smoothie was as efficient as cola in cleaning up the 2p coin:eek: . The advice was to only drink through a straw and a piece of cheese straight after a smoothie drink neutralises the fruit acid within seconds and reduces the damage to tooth enamel.

  • DD1 in secondary school, dinner and desert - £1.80 but she can get things at break time too, but I have her account capped as it's on a parentpay system ~(Fantastic system!!)

    DD2 £1.75 per day.

I tend to alternate school dinners and packed lunch.

Just for perspective, I never pay any more than £2 for my dinner in my company's canteen!

    £2 will buy you
    - a big bowl of salad (inc cheese, eggs) and a bowl of fresh soup
    or
    - a jacket potato and filling, plus soup & dessert
    or
    - something like lasange/cottage pie/stir fried veg & noodles etc

I can't believe how much school dinners now cost! I used to pay 50p in the late 80s.. Has inflation really made everything cost 4 times more?

  • my DD's i £1.80 and the menu is good tomorrow for example the

    menu is
homemade spag bol or vegetarian ravioli
    freshly baked bread,
    green beans and/or farmhouse veg
and homemade buttersotch tart for pudding

i think they can also get fruit or crackers and cheese for pudding if they dont like whats on offer

yummy they also have a website where you can view the weeks menu in advance
I'd rather pay a bit extra for them to get a balanced diet that pay crap and get crap
Other women want a boob job. Honey the only silicone i'm interested in is on a 12 cup muffin tray, preferably shaped like little hearts
