Looks like Dacorum Council Homeless staff have absolutely no idea about living on a real budget and not having enough money to manage day-to-day life..... maybe we should arrange a "real-life" experience - a "Red Letter Day" for the people in ivory towers to realise what life is REALLY like!

BTW, did you get any "support" from "other agencies"? And how can you be expected to "consider other housing options" if you don't have the means to pay a huge deposit for private rented accomodation?!

And where exactly do they expect a family to go on Christmas Eve? Are there many empty stables around your area MoT?!

Sorry, but that has made me really mad

I do get fed up of the Council bashing, none of us know the back story for any of these other people. Just because their stories sound similar, it doesn't mean that they are.

I'm confident that staff are very aware of how some people struggle to manage day to day life. I'm also sure that they are aware of the many many people who believe that they don't have to pay their rent because if they get evicted the council 'has to' rehouse them. The same people who they see coming through their doors time and time again.

I'm sorry but seriously, do you really think it's the Councils job to rehouse someone just because they've accummulated enough arrears to be evicted? Why should a person who chooses not to pay their rent have more priority than someone who lives in overcrowded conditions who's struggled on and done without but managed to keep a roof over their head?

If I don't bother to pay my mortgage and lost my house would you expect the council to rehouse me? Or would you expect me to take responsibility for my actions and sort it out myself?

If MOT had got into rent arrears because she had mismanaged her finances then I would completely agree with her LA's decision that she made herself intentionally homeless and I wouldn't expect her to be rehoused through the homelessness office. However she appears to have some mitigating circumstances, which should have been thoroughly investigated before a decision was made. IMHO this hasn't been done and this is why I am supporting MOT in her fight.

    Hi Gforce,

You are quite right in that we do not know the exact situation behind these other people - it is 'sensational news' at its best and Georgia at the HHG did tell me that these families had called her on the back of my story. It would be interesting to meet these people to see what they are like - I have my own opinions slowly forming due to the fact that neither family has called me for solictors info (even though I had mentioned Legal Aid to G) if they really want help with re-housing then I would have thought that they would have rung me straight away wouldn't you?

I would have thought so. But TBH I'm no longer surprised by some peoples firmly held belief that it's up to someone else to sort their life out for them, they're probably waiting for you to contact them to arrange an appointment!

Well, I won't be doing that! I have my own life to sort out not someone else's! I think you are right though - they will have looked at my article and thought 'lets get in on this' but won't do anything else to help themselves:confused:

  • Hi MOT
have you heard from solicitor yet? here's hoping theres some good news in the pipeline for you.
Dacourum council seem to be all heart don't they? how can they seroiusly let a person take her baby to go and live in a caravan because she has split up with her boyfriend?
it makes me sooo mad that the people that seem to need help the most are the ones that they think are the least eligible for help.
not to make light of your situation MOT but it seems like some kind of dickensian nightmare, are they going to suggest the workhouse for you next?

It is, indeed, an excellent article and confirms what many of us think about the 'goings on' at Dacorum.

Just re-typed the link - can't understand why yours didn't work for me.
