How would you feel if you were 'found out'?

  • I m always slightly suprised that some peoples usernames are just their names. How boring and thoughtless. I chose mine to describe something about me. It gives an insight into the life I would like. I value the anonimity (sp) so I can say whatever I like.

I only used my name because I didn't think I'd be around this long.... I didn't come here intending to post, only to lurk and take advice.

I guess I wouldn't mind too much if I got found out, I don't think I've said anything too controversial

    Devastated.

The anonymity allows be to be very honest - to get the best advice you can give for my situation and most of all with myself and OH. Prior to DFW our underlying financial situation was almost 'fur coat and no knickers"!

My signature has my LBM and progress. If all identity was to be revealed I would have to go back and edit this and all previous posts.

In getting started the DFW board allowed me to rehearse how I would discuss our debts at home without sending us all into a decline. MSE forums have got me to explain my motivation to get debt free and view my family in a different relationship with money.

OH recently saw my login and said 'thats you' I told him to go away as it was private. He did and I know he would not pry. I tell the DFW's more than I have told anyone in a long time.

I wouldn't mind. But I don't use my proper name in case someone I have been a bit harsh to is someone I really know...hmm tricky...

Thanks Spirit, I think you have just summed up the whole purpose of the DFW forum!

  • I would be mortified if i was recognised, but I have to admit that I have recognised someone I know quite well, she is a neighbour of ours and her DH works with mine  we do speak quite often, but never spoken to eachother on here,I think she has sussed me out,but has never said, just like I have never said anything to her about her situation, she is in a very good financial situation, quite the reverse of ours :o thinking about it,there is no way she couldn't work out my identity,I doubt many have had the bad luck we have had :o
I like the fact we never talk about MSE,our usernames are nothing to do with our real identities,so by not mentioning it we are respecting each others wish for anonimity ;)

I'd told my sister about one of the forums I visited, and she mentioned that she'd looked at it and spotted me (my user name comes from an old address, so she'd have recognised it although most people wouldn't). It did throw me a bit, so since then I've been a bit careful about what I say. I avoid using my real name or too many details though - there are some funny people out there in internet land, and if you give a full name and the area where you live, most people aren't too difficult to find and on a different forum I used to go to there was a big fuss over someone contacting another member's employer and trying to get him sacked over stuff he'd posted.

Being recognised scares me to death but not for myself. The only debts I have are because family members can't get credit in their own name and I wouldn't like certain ex family members to know this. My user name isn't an obvious choice for me but I do wish now that it was even more obscure as there are times when I would like to discuss things with you guys and daren't in case people put 2 and 2 together.

I like the anonimity (even if I can't spell it). I think someone at work may have sussed me just by a few comments she made - nothing nasty just telling me how she's paying off her credit cards. I've not done anything to be ashamed of and I'm no worse of than lots of others but it's nice to talk to people who don't know you and aren't shy of giving you a kick up the ar%e when it's needed.

Personally i would be totally devasted especially if my mum and a close friend found out, as they think i am so sorted financially and would never allow myself to get into debt, and i just leave them to think that. if they have clicked and realise who i am then fair enough, but thye have not said anything to me :)
