There is no problem with spending exactly £30. My husband did this, three times, for petrol, this weekend.

Blimey he's good with the petrol gun! I've never managed to nail the pound :).

Regarding PIN requests being random (as CS informed me, on asking) some unfortunates will get regular checks as some seem to get none, with the majority getting a few.
That's what they say. But it's rather surprising how many checks TSB customers get (enough to generate several threads on here alone), whereas users of other credit and debit cards get practically zero.

    Agreed.

I bought something today which came to exactly £30.00.

I tried it thinking i wouldn't be surprised if it failed but it went through no problem. Bloke was about to set it up for chip & PIN but thankfully asked if i wanted to pay contactless.

I used to have the same problem with con-tactless transaction but since I learn how to use it never fail ...

Those who have the problem. Try this
    - Find cash machine and withdraws small cash £10 (say) using PIN.
It hasn't failed for you yet.

My experience differs. I did a £10 ATM withdrawal with PIN. I then attempted a contactless transaction. PIN requested

Why is a £29 transaction less likely to fail than a £30 transaction? What evidence do you have to support this hypothesis?

People aren't bothered about being asked for a pin on most cards, it's only a problem for the TSB card as people are relying on using contactless for the cashback which you don't get with a pin transaction.

.... and it's a bit embarrassing when you dig into your wallet for a different card to complete the transaction (my 'other' card is minimum payment till February 2018). Makes it seem that it doesn't actually belong to you!

This could be because the terminal where you did your shopping ? Where did you do your purchase ? I did most of my purchase in high street shops. Never use them in the petrol station in the suburbs.

I think you could try to eliminate the problem like this. When you found your contactless transaction fail, at the same day withdraw £10 again from cash machine. And then use it to purchase item from the shop where you have used before or know for sure that the terminal work well.

I was told by the cashier in the shop where I purchase item. It might be true might not be true, do not know ...

But in fact I always limit or purchase my shopping to £29 rather than £30.

Like I said, I have the same problem in the past I even needed to ask for card replacement. I did what I mention previously since then never fail ...

Those who have not tries it try it. If it still does not work then it might due to the terminal of the shop you are using. It might also be something else.

It's true I wouldn't be bothered if I was asked for a PIN with my other cards. The fact is, I'm not.

I am one of those people who seem to get asked for a PIN every 2rd or 3rd transaction.

I only really use it in my local Post Office, and the owner herself has commented how often mine is rejected for contactless, as she is very used to me switching to my AMEX after the dreaded beep-beep insert card message. She said it only seems to happen with me, and we tend to joke about the failures now and guess whether they will go through or not, so regular are they.

My side if I get asked for a PIN every 2 to 3 transactions without fail over a 1 year period, it doesn't feel random. The only random-ness seems to be if I will get asked for my PIN on the 2 or 3 transaction after a prior PIN entry :rotfl:
