TSB Contactless - question for you

1) Just wondering to what lengths you go to get the 5% cashback up to the total spend of £100.
If there's a chance to pay for something contactless then i do it.
But would you ask a shop to break a £50 purchase for example into say a £30 & a £20 just to get the cashback?
If i knew the person at the till i probably would but not in a big store :rotfl:I figure there's people here with more cheek than me though
2) Are any of you having bother with your TSB contactless?
I've used Santander & Halifax contactless no problem but TSB seems to be very hit & miss.
I bought something where i work & paid contactless, or went to, but the machine said i had to swipe or enter PIN.
Bought something a few days later, exact same card machine used - this time it worked.
Has happened numerous times in town too - sometimes works, sometimes doesn't (yes, all amounts under £30).

Of course I'd split the shop - wouldn't matter whether it was a small or large store, local or non-local. £2.50 cashback vs. no cashback...surely a no-brainer?
I've read on MSE and learnt from experience that TSB is a bit more 'sensitive' when it comes to contactless transactions in that you need to enter your PIN more frequently compared to other providers. Don't mind it to be honest, 5% cashback on debit card transactions makes it more than worthwhile.

So you still get the 5% even if it's not contactless? I thought it was only on contactless transactions? You get it just by simply using the debit card??
I really couldn't do that in a big shop for sure though. Hey this £100 item, can you sell it to me as 3x £30 & 1x £10? Sorry guys waiting on me, i want £5lol

If you contactless it first then it asks for a pin it counts as a contactless transaction.0

Oh well that's shot that one down then0

There are some conspiracy theories about TSB requiring a PIN so frequently just to avoid paying the 5% but that's nonsense. This month I have had a couple of consecutive PIN requirements for large (contactless-wise) payments but I've also made three contactless (£30, £30 & £16) in a pub without the need of my PIN. I therefore completely believe that it is random. It's annoying but random.0

Well it didn't work so many times for me that I gave up even trying to use my TSB cards for contactless payments. Not very MSE of me I know. Fortunately Apple Pay came to the rescue. Just a shame it's nearly over.:(0

I haven't needed to put my PIN in once yet. I've been using it on public transport around London, and in three local supermarkets.
I've probably jinxed it now and I'll never be able to do a successful contactless transaction again!!0 -
I have an individual and joint account and noticed that the individual card, which was used a couple of times before the joint one, had the earlier request for a PIN.
I rang customer service and asked if there was a set number of contactless transactions allowed between requests and was told that it was randomly generated.
My ways round are:
1) To carry both cards and use the other if one's PIN is requested, then use the first one for a £1 purchase.
2) To get round the £30 limit, especially if in a supermarket offering money off a £40 spend (so the purchases can't be grouped to come under £30), I spend the requires amount for the £40 offer, then pay enough in cash to leave £30 or less to pay contactless. (A Morrisons checkout lady told me it happens quite often, but you must tender the cash before using the card.)0
