How long should it take a closed account to be removed from online banking (Halifax)

Closed my Halifax credit card over the phone a few weeks ago.

Just logged in & it's still showing today. Balance as "Nil" but still showing.

I would've thought it'd have gone within a few weeks. Does it wait for the next statement issue before it goes? It's been that long since i had a Halifax account that i can't remember.

  • I can't remember exactly but it's a while - maybe something like three months? When I closed my card they told me what the timetable is over the phone. It doesn't mean it's not closed.

I closed my TSB card over a year ago and it still shows in their internet banking!

I closed mine in branch the other day, and they told me it would close from 27th Sept. I'm hoping that it really does close...as I want it to show as settled for credit rating purposes. Don't want it to still be showing as available credit!! (my ratio is quite high - all stoozed)

I've made a note to check internet banking in a few days time.
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.56% of current retirement "pot" (as at end January 2025)
  • Ahh thanks. I wasn't sure if they'd made a mistake & not closed it properly or something.
  • I closed mine about 5 weeks ago and it showed up Monday on my credit file.
  • I applied last year for a Clarity card to take the place of their Platinum account.
The Plat account dissapeared from the website after a few months.

I've closed credit cards with both the Halifax and Lloyds bank in the last few years and I remember seeing something somewhere about the cards remaining visible for up to six months.

    Hope that helps.

AFAIK It can be up to 6 months as 20aday said, athough it will be closed from the date requested.

My Internet banking now shows my "available balance" as Nil.....but strangely shows a credit limit of £200, when it had been £2000. Not sure what's going on there?

Surely if the card is cancelled, I don't have ANY credit limit!

Do not know about Halifax. But for Lloyds which I believe will be the same with Halifax It takes 6 months before it disappears.

If you call them to check it they will say that the a/c has been closed.

I think the purpose of that is to prevent you to re-apply within 6 months.

When Lloyds Bank has closed my account it showed a credit limit of £200 too (even though it'd been something like £1,500).
