Hi , im looking at cutting back a bit on Christmas presents and do believe that people go crazy at this time of year spending so much money and basically loose the whole meaning of Christmas . £5 to most will sound like an rediculiously low amount but why do you have to spend crazy amounts ? I can suggest looking perhaps at places like POUNDLAND or perhaps HOMEBARGAINS , also in the north we have a shop called BM BARGAINS there is always items like DVDS VIDEOS ETC wort looking at .

I also think that such much emphasis is placed on " How much must we spend at Christmas " on each person , why shouldnt someone be happy with something small and not costing a lot ? It surely should come down to
Its the thought that counts .......

I think £5 is very reasonable- For children there are lots of things such as books, audio books games etc within and below that budget.Take advantage of 342 offers and save even more money so if you buy 3 items at £5 each from Boots you would only pay £10 for the 2 and they can be any from the range with the 342 sticker on.Lots of bath smellies , perfume sets, toys, books, games are included.Primark have lots of bargains always below £5.Like the above poster said it's not the price or qunatity of presents that matter it's the actual spirit of christmas and the thought that counts.

  • Blockbusters are selling new DVD's at the moment 2 for £10, some selected titles are £2.98 and £4.98, you can also get second hand computer games there for under £5 (they are doing lots of multibuy deals)

Before anyone asks YES I do work for them - but seeing as I earn minimum wage I am in no way doing this to promote Blockbusters, I just think if dvds and games are something you are thinking of buying - pop into your local store and see what they've got :o
  • why not buy joint presents as well.

So say its a family of 5 thats £25 you could put together a great movie night in hamper with dvd, popcorn, sweets, etc, or you could get a family board game, or tickets for a family day out
  • or start a family goodie bag thing that can become a yearly tradition it will cost a bit in the intial buying all the se=weets and little fillers in bnut when divided by each person gets a bag the price per person will be low.

my grandmother was german and always did us a goodie bag woth german biccies in and a small treat of some sort and some sweets, nuts, oranges .

sadly last year she passed away and one thing we have always said in our family is that i wouldnt be xmas with out the german goodie bag so i decided to take on this to keep the tradition going. i even printed out recipes and stuck them to card to make a little basic book with things like gingerbread houses for xmas and all the ususal stuff like the biccies, nuts eyc and it wasnt a huge costs per person, and everyine loved it

sorry to have rembled just a thought

the family movie night sound s good too.

Thank you for all your ideas, it certainly has got me thinking. i have just got in from shopping and bought a flora!!!

I don't think £5 is too low as I intend to look at the sales and definitely the 342 which is everyway now.

there is good bottle of red wine reduced to £4.99 in my co-op which would suit my brother in law.

Also I have about £60 in points on my boots card, £60 in goldfish points on my credit card, and points to convert in to vouchers from test & vote surveys.

I think I shall go out shopping just for a couple of people at a time and look hard to get something to suit them, and wrap it special.

Asda have got some deals - paperbacks - 3 books for £1 (in a triple pack) and wolf blass yellow label merlot £3 per bottle plus of course visit your local boots for clearance bargains and M&S has almost all their sale clothes at 50p
Have a look at the baskets thread to see how you can make it all look far more expensive
;) If you think you are too small to make a difference, try getting in bed with a mosquito!
