My hospital visit last week resulted in my new consultant giving me a list of vestibular exercises. My favourite one is going up and down the stairs with my eyes closed. That's not going to happen! I fall over on flat ground with my eyes open!
I have to go in for an assessment and then a tailored plan. My understanding is that (in my case at least) the brain needs to be communicating properly with the balance system and eyes. Mine are all playing Chinese Whispers - so poor old brain tries to make sense of it, often doesn't - then gets very fatigued and I fall over.
Basically the exercises aim to 'unlearn' the brain's coping strategy and 'reset' it. There is nothing wrong with the individual bits - they just aren't working together.
So my probs will get worse before they get better

Folks - fwiw, the only way I'll ever get up a flight of stairs is backwards on my backside.:D
And my hair is falling out in handfuls - can I post you some? :rotfl:
I've actually left the house for something other than dog-walking today. This is a notable event! We went to the local charity shop with a boxful of stuff that no longer has a place in our lives but could do others some good.
Yay- I can get to my card-making stuff without having to lift a boxful of gibble off the top first!:rotfl:
Samhain Blessing, all; - gotta go, Mr LW is going to want his dins soon, and it's Qu0rn fillets in HM white wine sauce, so I'd better get my sorry butt into the kitchen, I guess. If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
LameWolf, that's the only way I can manage stairs as well.Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, Do without.0

Don't look for the negatives regarding your move...look at the fact you'll have lovely fresh air, beautiful mountains, lakes and sublime chocolate and cakes! Fairyland! I'd love it...as long as they sold Marmite! That'd be a deal breaker! Keep on going and stay positive! X
Hahahaha evading capture like a reverse version of The Sound of Music...
Thank you for reminding of the positives of moving, Austria really is a fairyland. Not sure about Marmite - I'm sure it's there somewhere but definitely not widespread! My boyfriend can't understand why anyone would eat it  There is a cool, although £££, shop in Vienna that sells US and UK food, it's so interesting to go in there and see things that you never realised were typically British or that you couldn't get in other countries. They also often have things I haven't seen since childhood, which is always fun!Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints!0 -
When, oh when will I learn to pace myself?? Been mega-busy all week, and it's finally caught up with me; a lot of pain and zero energy today. So I've achieved precisely zilch today, apart from a bunch of online surveys. *sigh* I never learn.
I hope everyone else is faring better that I this day.If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
LW - I think that being unable to pace ourselves is the undoing of most of us with illness/fatigue conditions. It has taken my OH a very long time to understand that I need to try and do this, not because he is unkind or uncaring, but although 7 years older than me, he is (thank goodness) strong and fit and rarely even out of sorts.
The temptation is when we have a good day or so, to think that this will continue and then a complete crash catches up with us.
Great news about the doggy agency, I hope that you soon get to meet new four legged clients and their owners:DThe best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. (Abraham Lincoln)0 -
Maddiemay yep, exactly the same here - Mr LW is 10 years older than me, and very rarely does he have anything worse than a cold; like your OH, he's not unkind or uncaring, he just doesn't realise that keeping going when I really should rest is likely to knock me into Wednesday week. And of course I feel ashamed of how little I achieve, so go all out to do as much as possible when I have a reasonably good day, then pay for it in spades afterwards. I don't think there's any easy answer.
Anyways, we're going to attempt to make our Yule puds today; wish me luck...... :rotfl:If your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
Evening all
Yep its one of the joys of living on my own - I can have a collapsing day/ couple of hours when I need it. Balanced by no one to help me when strength in hands are needed or lifting or things like rubbing down chairs to re coat are now a cause of pain rather than something I really enjoy!! Hey ho - I can at least still cook for me self!! And others are worse off!

Aldi online have some electric tools like mini sanders etc. Would something like that help you do things you enjoy?
I am taking advantage of the fact that I am on my own to have a duvet day and charge up my batteries ready for a busy weekend with all the family round.
I usually bribe son in law with bacon sarnie (not that I need to) and he does things I can't quite manage. He is still glowing with pride after being called "the big lad" by the builder months ago.;)"This site is addictive!"
