The signs made sense before car seats were a requirement - it warned emergency services that there may be a small child in there. Now they have seats/boosters it should be obvious enough without a sign.

That said, a sign might be useful for instance in car parks where people may give you a bit more space.

But when you consider that people leave them in the car all the time no matter if they have kids or not then that makes them useless!.

Depends on your particular mindset/point of view but usually the sign

    • is a warning sign for the car behind, that at any moment the driver may be distracted by a child and potentially cause an accident
    • is a way of arrogantly implying that the following driver needs to modify their driving so as not to endanger the precious child
    • when stationary warns that at any moment a rear door may be flung wide open into your path
    • When parking tells you to either leave a full doors width or park 2" off the side so either they can fling the door to its check stop, or they can't open it at all
    • Watch out for sweet wrappers, drinks cans or even the contents of a potty coming out of the windows.

Don't think it makes any difference in an accident, as the child seat should be there.
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Let's face it, they're mostly used because it's not socially acceptable to have a sticker saying "My genitalia works!"

Using a child seat as a guide is as useless as using the sticker. People don't take the car says out when the children aren't in it.

Emergency crews will always make a full check of the vehicle and immediate surrounds as well as asking any other occupants where possible.

The only vehicle signs that emergency crews assiduously take notice of are Hazchem signs

I’ve always wanted a sign that read: “Licensed firearm and two Rottweilers on board.”

Still probably safer than a vehicle with a child on board sticker.

To be fair having children and driving them around is such a rare and notable event that it needs to be announced in some way.

Since our fireman friend told my wife that a child on board sign prompts firemen to check for a child first in event of an accident, she is adamant that we have one in our car.

    Oh come on, seriously?

So otherwise they look inside the car only for adults and then half an hour later when a child crawls out of the wreckage they say "!!!! - never thought to check for kids"

Looking at it from the other perspective, there has been time wasted by fire crews checking if a child is on board because of a sticker on the window.

And also more socially acceptable for parents than "i've got children now so i've no life of my own anymore"

I though it meant "Sorry I'm driving like a (text removed by MSE Forum Team), I'm distracted by a screaming child"

I would like to see the evidence of the child that was only saved by the emergency services because mummy and daddy stuck a cute sign in the window. On Googling I found no stories, but I did find 'one in 20 accidents caused by'
