A trader has responsibilities if he sells a faulty product. It is far, far more difficult to get a judgement against a private seller for selling a faulty product!

But you must give a trader the opportunity to fix the fault and you do have the option to reject the vehicle outright.

At £1700 for the fuel pump it has to be a diesel distribution pump.

Had a vectra that kept putting the EML on and dropping into limp mode, the codes pointed to the fuel pump in that, but popular opinion was that a leaky injector produces the same symptoms. Wasn't much help to us, as a new one was more than the car was worth.

The car is sluggish, but i put that down to needing a good service and he fact its a 4x4 so its not going to be a smooth ride

The cars going to have to be booked in to a garage for investigation but the codes are not a good sign for this particular model of car

Anyway , lesson learnt , i should know better

    What is the car?

You bought a car unseen. Caveat emptor.

    Sounds like a trade seller.

And the car isnt as described.

And there was a known fault the seller didnt disclose.

You can reject the car without giving the seller the opportunity to repair, however the problem here is it sounds like a trader masquerading as a private seller.

If hes prepared to do that, then hes unlikely to want to fulfill his legal obligations.

    Prove it...

Which, if he'd gone to collect it, would have been perfectly good grounds to annul the eBay purchase. But he accepted it by proxy, by sending a delivery service to collect it.

    It doesnt matter.

If hes a trader masquerading as a private seller, then hes still a trader.

Keep screen shots of any advert he puts up as it will strengthen your case.

Seller is selling multiple cars. I'd say the onus is on the seller to prove he isnt a trader.

Courts and trading standards love that sort of stuff.

It doesnt matter about ebay - you have a right to reject under consumer law, and you are not deemed to have accepted the vehicle until several weeks after purchase.

    Surely you know that?
