Errrr... I have lots of vices!
Cook books, red wine, shoes, jackets!!
    Aaaand holidays!!
I am willing to eat beans on toast for weeks in order to buy a flight somewhere.
Willing to sell all my shoes.
Sometimes we go Airbnb and cook for ourselves, sometimes we go all inclusive, sometimes we go street food...
That is my biggest vice. And beats all others. You have to budget a lot to pay for that!
  • What an interesting thread!! May I join?

In the past I have had almost all of the addictions on here. Then last year I decided that I wanted to achieve my dream and move down to Cornwall (where I originally come from) and had to downsize everything.

Dear confessors at one time I had:
    150 nail varnishes
    500+ books
    37 different spices
51 cookery cooks (not included in the above number)
Full sets of clothes for 3 women - one size 14; one size 16 and one size 18
5 types of coffee in the house at all times
And a serious addiction to C!sta and Chazzers

BUT moving house and am trying to loose weight!
realisitically I am not gonna be a size 14 ever again and those things were 1980s clothes - sold em to a vintage shop!!!
Gave away/sold a load of books - down to below 100 now qnd only about 50 will be kept the rest will be read and then chazzered!
Cookery books - if not opened this year and cooked from then the remaining 20 will be further whittled down
Nail varnishes given away and now only (hark at me :rotfl:) have about 12 left that I will actually wear
Have discovered that Lid!l Java and Sumatra coffee is lovely!! so there is that + plastic coffee for a friend that doesn't like real (honest :p !!!) and have an esspresso machine but no coffee at mo - I tend to drink that in the winter!
    So am getting better!!!
Am trying to replace coffees out and chazzer shopping with healthier and more slimming activities like going for a walk carrying my own drinks in the rucksack!!
Nope, I'm not a saint, and firmly believe that being frugal with our pennies (and not adding more than we need to big companies profits) is so that we can indulge on what we enjoy (as opposed to buying stuff to compensate for feeling stressed and unhappy). To the extent that I have dropped half of my work that I used to do but will still go on hols to Belgium in 2017 (need to pay £50 deposit this week) and have a car so I can zap up the motorway to see DS1+ DGD.
Frugaling onward folks!! I think it is a better and more eco friendly life style! :j
Aim for Sept 17: 20/30 days to be NSDs  NSDs July 23/31 (aim 22) :j
NSDs 2015:185/330 (allowing for hols etc)
LBM: started Jan 2012 - still learning!

  • Gosh what a lot of 'secret sinners' we have here :):):) but also its interesting to see that most of our 'sins' are paid for by 'frugalling on' . I think its a great way to feel slightly 'sinful' yet 'virtuous' at the same time .We all need a wee bit of pampering and 'me' stuff to cheer ourselves up so if its nails, books clothes or posh smelly candles the rest of your family aren't going without so a bit of sinning now and again probably does more to keep you on the straight and narrow than anything else :)

When it comes to perfume the only stuff I buy ,which is about every 18 months or so is Chanel No. 5, but I use it sparingly and have 'normal' smellies as Christmas presents from my DGD as a rule:). My late OH used to buy me No.5 and it always reminds me of him when ever I wear it :)

Now and again my eldest DD has a sort out of her perfume (she does buy quite a bit ) and I get to recycle them for her :) not keen on Opium though :)So I will carry on with my coffee, garlic and chilli oil habit with the occasional bottle of No.5, but I too am more than happy to pay for my sins by using Aldi's ,Lidls and Y/S stuff which enables me to sin without stressing :):):)

That's the thing-being frugal is not about surviving on as little as possible and cutting down even further to the point of ridiculousness (is that even a word??).
In my eyes, it's about cutting down wastage and unnecessary unused things.
So if you use your Jo Malone, 50 nails varnishes and buying that next Hairy Biker book makes you happy and you love looking at the pictures of the food, how is that a waste???
    It isn't.

Life is for living too, not just existing.
  • It's not a terrible vice, but I do buy quite a nice cleanser and moisturiser. We're not talking Creme de la Mer here, but it feels expensive compared to what I spend on other things and I could definitely save money by switching. But it's my one little luxury and I choose to save on other things so I can afford it.

There is one vice I have which makes me feel very guilty. Once a month I buy 25 Beautiful Homes magazine . I don't read it straight away, I hoard it it until the time is right. I have to have spare time, hubby has to be out and, depending on the time of day, I retreat to my posh lounge with either a cup of earl grey tea (tea cup and saucer) or a gin and tonic (best crystal only). It's a ridiculous waste of £4 a time and sometimes I have two issues waiting to be read but I just can't help myself. Once I've read it I pass it on to either my mum or one of my friends - but never the same person twice in a row - heaven forbid anyone should think I actually buy it every month:o
I would have been the first to volunteer to be your friend :Dif the magazine weren't available online. But it is, and ideas can be P'inned :T

Strangely enough I have never seen perfume as a luxury, although it undoubtedly is expensive. Perhaps it's because I wear it every day yet bottles still last for ages? (When it works out at pennies a day it's far easier to justify!). This evening I fancied an early night in my PJs and rubbed some scented lotion into my skin, it always lifts me.

Hope is not a strategy :D...A child is for life, not just 18 years....Don't get me started on the NHS, because you won't win...I love chaz-ing!
  • I too have a weakness for books, cookbooks (300+), social history books (100+) and novels (1000+)
I should really sort them to go to the charity shop, tho that is dangerous cos I come out with more, as I only rent a small space. its the ongoing joke that I need to rent an extra room as a library. the thing is tho, every time I start to look throo the ones stored under my bed I find ones ive forgotten so get to reread them.
my mother had a button box that I split with my sisters when she died and I know that when we use old clothing for fabric we always save the buttons to reuse on other garments. especially handy as we all knit so it saves buying any.

I do like a glossy magazine. Yet often they're full of vacuous articles and adverts!

I subscribe to Simple Things magazine and that's my favourite now.

A new one for me is semi permanent lashes. I don't feel the need for make up when I have them !

I had gel nails for a holiday several years ago and loved them, so I bought the red carpet set which was the only one at the time, and it's fab I get cheap polish from eBay, and take it off with little foam pads dipped in acetone and the little plastic clip on keepers whilst I watch telly at night.
I only lightly file the nail with a buffing file so no damage is done.

Scottish Minnie have a look at a subscription for your magazine, I used to buy house beautiful and then discovered a subscription only cost £20.00 a year and it gets delivered:T less than half the price of buying monthly, it has risen slightly since then but still a saving. Although I have finally weaned myself of it now and cancelled it.:D
Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.
