Digforvictory - you just bought back a lovely memory for me - my Gran used to have a button box - 100's and 100's of buttons all different sorts, it was like a treasure box to me as a young child - no idea what happened to it, how sad. Does anyone keep button boxes now?

    Sorry - a bit OT

    Makeup...especially high-end makeup :o

I buy almost all of my clothes from charity shops or Primark and try to buy as much food at a reduced price as possible...but makeup is my weakness :p
Me too! I spent a fortune at the weekend but I didn't have to think twice about it, as I will use it until it's gone. In fact I couldn't wait to try it on the next day (scrubbing off the days existing slap and replacing in the afternoon would have not been MSE). My preference is to spend more on products that sit in direct contact with the skin (ie foundation, powder) and less on those that are powders on top - such as blusher - or need replacing frequently - mascara.

I have scaled back on YS shopping, I find shopping at Aldi by list to be far better value.

  • Thank you freyasmum and MrsTinks for the nail advice. My hairdresser's beautician uses a file but the Thai nail bar in town insist on using the electric one, stating that the gel won't stick without it. I must say that for the same price I much prefer the hairdresser's calm and attractive setting and the result seemed better overall, but it would add an hour to my treat so I could only manage to go once every six weeks when my roots are done. Maybe I will try my own in the interim and as it happens I did buy some Avon gel polish at a car boot a couple of weeks ago (20p!). I have a lot of shopping vouchers so maybe I will treat myself to a gel kit, although I am not brilliant at applying nail varnish and find it comes off quite quickly.

I have a sensationail set (available from boots or direct from them) and it's one of the best things I have had nails wise. I don't get to use it too often now but with what I do at home and then my 'hobby' of running a wheelchair rugby team my nails take a battering so I'm lucky if normal polish lasts more than 2 days. With sensationail I can easily stretch 2/3 weeks of quality colour. You can pick up the colours cheap at some outlets but i prefer to buy direct when there's a special offer on (most weekends there is a set colour on half price etc) plus you get a small tool/extra free when buying direct.
I do think it's worth spending a little time watching their youtube tutorials and gleaming tips then spend a little time doing your own and pampering yourself :)

my guilty pleasures are sushi (not very regularly at all and only from boots/sainsburys but I do love it), fizzy pop for at work (I buy cans or mini bottles so I don't drown myself in 2lts every couple of days!) and buying bits for birthdays/Christmas which I can't wait to give to the recipient so they get it early.

Oh and Christmas sales....I'm a real sucker for post Christmas sales!

Nails for me as well, I get gel nails that last 2 weeks, I love having nice nails and only cost £12 and I don't buy myself much else.

I work full time and think I deserve a treat.

If I could afford it, I'd get a professional blow-dry every week.

Actually I can afford it, I just think it's one luxury too many. But it does make you feel great :D

£12 is a price I could live with, but £20 seems a little indulgent seeing as a lot of people only have that sort of budget for a week's food. I guess I spent too long having to watch every penny so splashing out like this is a little reckless, even though it's not going to break the bank. Old habits die hard.

    My secret obsession is stationery.

My job (secretarial) has few perks, but one is that I am in charge of the thrilling tome that is the Stationery Catalogue. I order bog standard yellow Post Its and own brand Biros for my researchers; for myself I get exciting multi-coloured Post It cubes and posh gel pens "for the professional finish". Oh yes!

Re button jars; I was delighted to play buttons with a friend's 5 year old recently. They were the buttons her mum and nan also played with, so fantastic to see such cheap entertainment still being enjoyed.

I have a £6 per month Lovefilm DVD rental which is great value, but I do like the treat of going to my local independent cinema (£12 a seat, so quite naughty). There is still something a bit special about the ads, trailers and lights going down. It shows arty foreign films so no chav teenagers giggling (European films are full of nudity "for artistic reasons" so they've missed a trick).
    They are an EYESORES!!!!

I am so enjoying this confessional thread.
While we're hanging out our hair shirts I must also admit to a hidden bottle of Jo Malone's perfume. I keep it for the rare big occasion. Other times I'll use whatever cheapie comes to hand which atm is a large bottle of lavender water purchased recklessly at a church sale for £1. I've had several compliments on my fragrant self since using it, far more than I get when wearing the J M. Never mind, I know what it takes to make me feel special.

Other make up doesn't thrill me. I tend to slap whatever face cream is on offer, for the last couple of weeks that has been handcream. Of course, this may explain the texture of my face which would probably benefit from a coating of polyfilla (fills cracks and crevices, makes worn surfaces new.)

Out, Vile Jelly: I am possessed with uncontrollable jealousy at your stationery purchasing power.
    Absolutely green with it!
