My indulgence is sort of MSE. If there is any washing powder, liquid, tabs or fabric conditioner etc on special offer I have to buy them!! I remember an offer about 2 years ago when Fairy or Ariel tabs (big box) cost £10 each, £12 for 3 with a My Waitrose card, plus staff discount which ended up with them costing £7.50 - for all three!!! I bought enough to last me 6 months, then bought some more. I try really hard not to buy them at the moment (got sooooo much of it at the moment) but I like sniffing them all and deciding what my washing should smell like today! Better than buying handbags (let's not go there!)

Accidentally bought some Fairy today- but, but, but......it was on special offer, it was one of my Pick you own's and I got discount on it. Now just need to find somewhere to put it!

I have thoroughly enjoyed reading all about your secret vices. I found myself nodding to most of them....

Just reading about all your little tricks made me smile.

I am a real "champagne tastes, lemonade budget" kind of girl but like so many of you I have learned how to be thrifty and yet still indulge myself in a few of the finer things of life.:rotfl:

Life is far too short to wear a hair shirt all the time, and if we budget carefully and if we shop wisely then our little luxuries neednt break the bank.

Indeed some are even free. Now that I am retired the greatest luxury for me is time......

JUst sitting in the garden on a sunny day with a book and a cup of good coffee is priceless. One of my favourites is on a warm summer evening I sit out in the garden, light the chimenea and sit with a glass of wine, just watching the flames. And what could be nicer on a cold miserable winters afternoon than lighting some candles and curling up on the sofa with a cuddle blanket and the cat to watch a DVD whilst I paint my nails. Lol.
  • I have always had a magazine addiction. I managed to save by having cheaper subscriptions or 3 for £1 but now I save even more because I can read them through the library on my ipad. Saves a fortune!
  • You do need to use gel polish but you can also get polish to gel transformer from Sensationail that you mix with your normal polish to turn it into gel - so you can make use of those lovely OPI polishes in your machine!

They sell it in Boots or on their own website

When I come home from work, before the family catch on that I am in, I go to the bathroom, change from my workgear into homewear, and wash my feet with WARM water before I put on fresh socks. The water takes about two minutes to get warm, so it is a waste of water, but it helps me transition from work to home, and I feel spoilt every day.

Now and again my eldest DD has a sort out of her perfume (she does buy quite a bit ) and I get to recycle them for her :) not keen on Opium though :)So I will carry on with my coffee, garlic and chilli oil habit with the occasional bottle of No.5, but I too am more than happy to pay for my sins by using Aldi's ,Lidls and Y/S stuff which enables me to sin without stressing :):):)

Hi JackieO, Opium does smell very strong, but if you put it on the tips of your hair, or on your ankles, or anywhere where it does not warm up very much, the deepest notes will not develop, and you will only smell the topnotes, which in Opium are very nice. Maybe on a scarf (but beware of staining) or a hankie in your pocket?

I think my most guilty non-MSE buy is Lancome serum and moisturiser. I know everyone says that all moisturiser is the same and you should buy cheap brands as they will do just as good a job, but I feel like it is the best for my skin and I love it.

Really need a new bottle of serum and can't justify the expense currently. Will need to put it on my Xmas list I think, but then I worry that people might buy it when it is full price, rather than when on offer and with free travel size packs!
  • Bare minerals foundation... I got it 20% off the other week, it lasts for months on end, I'm not allergic to it and I don't look like I've been playing in mummy's make up bag, which I do if I wear anything heavier. Entertainingly I'm allergic to hypoallergenic stuff. I complimented a woman on her perfume once and her husband helpfully said "it's this" and sprayed me with it. Thankfully on my arm and I was able to get to a counter for a lady to help clean it off. It was clinique - so I know to avoid them!

I really like the annoying perfumes that are never reduced. Prada d'iris, which I got from a sale website once, it makes me sneeze, but I don't care. I have been eyeing up Dioressence but I find it hard spending that much on myself.

I have sky.... Basic plus cinema and the TV side is half price, I ring up each year to haggle. Our cinema burned down, and I'm a single mum so I'm at home, on my own on an evening 99% of the time. Plus I can watch TV/films and sew at the same time. Bringing me on to....

Fabric and other sewing paraphernalia. I haven't bought any fabric for AGES. It will have been this year, bit certainly before the summer. I had to get a new sewing machine this year, which was expensive, but necessary, mine had broken and they don't make spares for the utterly random brand it was! Haha. I am eyeing up some leather and needles at the moment, but haven't taken the plunge.

Oh and I'm so with buying "value" tea being a false economy. I don't buy gross tea as I have to throw it out. There are some popular brands that taste vile to me -PG and Typhoo being the worst offenders. I don't know why as everyone else seems to love PG, but I can't drink it. Even blind taste I can't drink it. I discovered I like Devon tea, Yorkshire tea and clipper as well as twinings, which is what I used to buy all the time. So I have cut the cost a bit by buying ones on offer.

Thanks for the tip Siebrie I will tell my DD that as its her favorite perfume.

My youngest DD has fairly cheaper tastes thank goodness when it comes to perfume .Her favorite for ages was M&S 'Isis' which has apparently been rebranded as 'Aqua'

I always get her a good sized bottle for one of her Christmas pressies as having four sons to keep in shoes and school clothes etc (apart from the eldest who is away at Uni) she rarely spend anything on herself.
She works full time as an estate agent and says that a client doesn't want to be overwhelmed with her perfume when she take sthem on a viewing;)

I think most of us on here have our ways of saving to pay for our treats and I think everyone need a nice little 'sin' now and again to keep us on the straight andnarrow :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  • The very best chocolate, often raw chocolate, expensive for a small bar. Good quality organic coffee beans. The best tea I can afford and it comes by mail order. lovely silk/cashmere/merino fibre for spinning and lately, 22 momme beautiful silk pillow cases. Top quality thread for my sewing machine and overlocker and the best fabric I can find
