Im glad I don't live in America, I don't agree with leaving a tip... no one gives me money for doing my job lol. And Ive worked in a low paid shop job and I now I have a higher up, better paid job. Either way, I don't see why people who bring you food should be given extra money, Ive gone above and beyond for people hundreds of times in my job but I wouldn't expect them to leave me £3 on the desk.

Oh boo hoo. I had the same deal sometimes when I worked for in retail, there are plenty of rubbish jobs out there.

    I wasn't complaining - just stating a fact.

I got myself an education (professional) & I really enjoy my job now. I'm paid to exercise my brain, not run around after people.

In American you don't tip for good service you tip (pay) for the service. This is where you're going wrong and why you are abused by Americans when you visit the States ;)

I don't mind, I have a thick skin as I said. Prefer to take my money elsewhere where they don't complain about tips.

Tips are earned in my eyes, not expected.

Next thing they want is a tip for taking a dump on an automated toilet because they installed the toilet

Yes this is the problem. You don't seem to understand that different countries have different cultures so when you go to these countries your behavior is loutish.

There is an important difference between being thick skinned and being just plain rude!

I get that different countries have different cultures, but why should people have to pay extra for poor service?

Because in America tipping is not paying for good or bad service, it is paying for the service you receive e.g. taking your order, bringing your food over, taking your plates away etc. If they don't do this then fair enough don't tip but if they do then you should

Just out of interest, as the thread seems to have moved to waiting in the US, the average hourly pay for this job in the States is $11, and the average annual salary is $23k.

    Put your hands up.

But this $11 an hour is made up of the tips they earn In addition to their salary.

That does seem excessive so I'm not sure what point you're trying to make.....

Isn't this the purpose of wages?

    In the UK yes.

    In the USA no.
