Just a thought. If you get all this 'junk' mail stopped you will not get all the money off vouchers that we also seem to get as unaddressed items ... then we will have something to complain about :D

Ivan....I swear if I'd ever received even one money off voucher from this lot that comes through my door on a regular basis then I'd be up asking the postie for some more!!

(But that's just because I'm a voucher junkie)

All the rubbish that comes through my door is for insurance that I don't want/ need (never with any special deal codes), conservatories that I can't afford (I mean HOW many conservatory companies are there in the UK?), double glazing (surprise surprise), SAGA holidays (I'm 32!) etc etc.

    It's all completely useless.

    And unwanted.

And IMHO a complete waste of paper.

I live in a block of 9 flats, and when unaddressed money-off vouchers arrive, they come in 9's. Fantastic! There was also a spate of charity letters containing pens a while ago, the result of which is that I will never have to buy another pen in my life.

All the rest of the unaddressed stuff, nobody is interested in and it sits in a "junk box" under the pigeonholes. I make sure it gets recycled now and then.

I once sent a fried egg back in a double-glazing company's reply-paid envelope. I obviously had too much time back then.

Not half as bad as the junk I receive into my email inbox each day ... I am starting to get a complex about certain things ... why do people think I need so much viagra?

I am a postman so perhaps I can try to clarify this point. All you need to do to stop unaddressed leaflets being delivered with you mail is write to the "DELIVERY OFFICE MANAGER" at your nearest postal delivery office. This letter simply needs to state that you no longer wish to receive any unaddressed items.

A special instruction card is then issued along with the Redirection & Keepsafe notices. This tells the postman or woman that they are not to deliver door to door items to a particular address.

Note that we are obliged to deliver certain unaddressed items such as election material. If we do not, we are accused of showing a bias towards or against certain political parties or candidates.

If you do not know the address of your delivery office, ask your postman.

Hope this helps. It works at our office.

Does anybody know if this will work on post for previous occupiers? Trying desperately not to rant, I have had to call the CAB re the unpaid bills which are still being delivered to me for the last owner - she has clearly ignored any post I have redirected over the last few months and they say not to send it on any more. I have returned to sender if there is an address on the envelope, but they are now arriving in anonymous second class junk mail looking envelopes. The CAB recommended I now send EVERYTHING back marked 'Not known at this address' and the post office will deal with it. My postman did ask and took some away for me last week, but she has several names so it keeps coming. It would be great if the stuff doesn't actually get to me at all.... Does the post office open it and send it back to sender?

    Thanks in advance

Bun, I'm sure what I am going to say is not legal, but I had a very similar problem.

I've been in my house for nearly three years and over the past twelve months have suddenly been getting overdue storecard account bills through for the previous occupier. I returned these as 'not known at this address' etc and forwarded some more to her new address, but they kept on coming and coming.

In the end, I opened the bills up and wrote on them 'Please activate change of address to......etc....' and returned them in the official reply envelopes. I know that I shouldn't have opened the bills, but I've not had another one since.

I'll probably get told off for posting this suggestion [sorry!] , but it worked for me and lifted a worry from my mind.

    Thanks Mrcow,

The lady at the CAB wasn't sure if I could open them deliberately or not (I think not) but I have had to give the forwarding address to one company (as I had to phone to prevent imminent debt collectors when we opened a letter by accident with our mail). I admitted to knowing this address and was told that I had to give it or they would be forced to use me as a go-between. I have no idea of the previous owners situation and do not want to give out the new address as I don't know I'm allowed to. I don't really want to get involved as they are still local and it will be obvious that it's us....

I didn't know any forwarding address for some of the stuff here, and eventually it all just stops coming.

I did know for the previous owner, and after months of forwarding stuff on to them I wrote on the envelope I was forwarding, "please notify these people of your new address, my patience is running out" after that the post for them stopped.

In my situation, I didn't know the forward address of the ones who were getting demands for payment from catalogue companies, eventually a woman knocked at the door, dressed all prim and proper and driving a sports car. she asked for "david" or whoever, (this made me laugh because David was obviously a student who had lived here B4 and there was no way this woman knew him) I knew straight away she was from the debt collection agency. I told her he doesn't live here, she made up some BS about needing to contact him as she was his friend etc, I said I have no contact details for him. Off she went. In the next few weeks another came calling, this time a big man in a tracksuit with a shaved head, (you got to laugh!), He asked for David and said he was a friend etc, I said...."If you hadn't started off by lying to me and you had actually told the truth about who you are, then if I had any info for you I would have given it, however, my response to you is that I have no idea who he is or where he is" That was the last I heard of them.

So you needn't have worried about the bailiff letters, they have to get a court order to enter your premises, and I doubt they would if you have told them person is not here. If they do get a court order and you are there, they can only take what they know belongs to the person, so they would wait until you returned home from work and then ask you, you can tell them person doesn't live here, and they have to go away, if they don't just phone the police.

However, you have put your foot in it because you told them you have a follow on address. Now they will use you as a go between. so you have two options.

    1. tell them the new address
    2. tell them a bogus address which the previous person gave to you.
