I've always hesitated to do this because I've felt that to make somebody else pay for "my" post would be either fraud or theft. Which is why I fill those envelopes with somebody else's junk and send it back to them.

the post office shouldnt deliver it as its not going to the intended company.. and do you want to take the risk of the parcel/letter not being delivered to whoever your sending it to..

you CAN stop mail to the occupier or leafletted. I got these addresses from another thread earlier this year
    1) Royal Mail Door to Door, Room 130, Wheatstone House, Faraday Road, Swindon, SN3 5JW
    2) Royal Mail Door to Door, Freepost, Beaumont House, OX4 5BR (tel 0845 0700702)

I haven't tried these yet but am assured they work.

Please bear in mind that if you haven't done everything you can to stop junk mail being sent to you then you are being incredibly wasteful by putting it all back into the mailing system.

I would be very suprised if this would work.

They send out thousands of leaflets for distribution from there, all unaddressed,so to ask them to not send one to you would be impossible.

Your postman will get a bundle of say 500 items, one for each delivery point on his walk,so he won't know who Not to send one to.

The only option i can think of,would be to contact customer services or the delivery office, and ask them to put a special instuction card in your fitting, but even then,i am not sure this would work.

I have been doing this for nearly 20 years now ... I have sent information about double glazing to readers digest ... I have sent readers digest information to Barclays ... I hate to waste all those free envelopes they give me.

I have never had the nerve though of strapping the freepost envelopes to a brick and sending it back ... but have been assured by someone that they have done it???? Wonder how much that cost?

Having said that it is not very money saving considering the companies need to recoup the cost and will simply add it onto the cost of their product - so I guess we have to pay for it in the end !!!

I love Ivans brick idea! Put the brick in a cardbox box and tape the freepost/postagepaid envelope to it, love it!

    Surfcat,

All the posters I see here have I think said they are on the mail preference register. It is "the occupier" and the totally unaddressed envelopes and flyers that we are most annoyed with. I never get any properly addressed junk mail.

If the Royal Mail have not had the decency to ask me if they can put leaflets and unaddressed envelopes into my house then I have no qualms about returning these unwanted items back to them.

I note your addresses and I will phone up and find out. but I agree with Carl, how will the postman know which houses have opted out?

    SO far not so good.......

I phoned royal mail CS (residential) from "say no to 0870" and I got theough to a woman who knew what I was asking for and referred me to the MPS and gave me an out of date phone no she also said they probably put your address on a do not deliver at the local mail depot. So I phoned MPS using "say no to 0870" and I was eventually disconnected. Went to MPS web site and they have the following quote:

"It will not stop mail that has been sent from overseas, un-addressed material or mail addressed to The Occupier"

    So it's not looking good.

I guess I'll try that number you gave.

    It does work!

Some time ago, I wrote to the Swindon address and instructed them not to deliver any unaddressed junk mail to me.

A few months later, my Postlady asked me if it would be OK to deliver the government 'Preparing for Emergencies' leaflet!

OTOH, I live in a village, am on first name terms with my Postlady and the Post Office is 50 yards from my house.
Their - possessive pronoun (owned by them e.g. "They locked their car").
    They're - colloquial/abbreviated version of 'They are'
There - noun (location other than here e.g. "You can buy groceries there") OR adverb (in or at that place e.g. "They have lived there for years") OR adverb (to or towards that place e.g. "Go there at noon") OR adverb (in that matter e.g. " I agree with you there").

    OK

I just phoned say no to 0870 - Royal Mail Delivery Customer services - 01752 387112 and he said, you can't do it over the phone but he confirmed the "wheatstone house" address above.

I asked him how they did it and he said the address is not put into a frame (or something like that). I asked does that mean poor wee postie will have to remember not to deliver to my house, he said not necessarily, because the postie should have a print out of either the houses which have opted out or the houses which are to be delivered to.

Royal Mail could for example deliver a leaflet to all addresses in UK saying......
If you do not want to recieve unaddressed mail delivered by RM in future please fill in the form on the back of this leaflet and return it to us at the given FREEPOST address.
Wouldn't that be the right way to handle this?

I'm sure it will still not stop addressed mail "to the occcupier" though. So the companies who use these tactics really need a few bricks sent back to them.

I am a postman so perhaps I can try to clarify this point. All you need to do to stop unaddressed leaflets being delivered with you mail is write to the "DELIVERY OFFICE MANAGER" at your nearest postal delivery office. This letter simply needs to state that you no longer wish to receive any unaddressed items.

A special instruction card is then issued along with the Redirection & Keepsafe notices. This tells the postman or woman that they are not to deliver door to door items to a particular address.

Note that we are obliged to deliver certain unaddressed items such as election material. If we do not, we are accused of showing a bias towards or against certain political parties or candidates.

If you do not know the address of your delivery office, ask your postman.

Hope this helps. It works at our office.
