Didn't expect Lexus to play these games.
Have you even bothered to look at the warranty documentation? It's very clear that the warranty is not provided by Lexus, but by TWG - http://www.thewarrantygroup.com/

Your dealer are not "Lexus", either - they are an independent dealer business, who hold a franchise from Toyota GB, and who trade under their own name. You've had no dealings with Toyota GB on this.

So in what way hasn't there been a failure of an electrical component? Since an electrical component designed to last the life of the vehicle has failed

    Define life of a car?

Perhaps Lexus consider the useful life of a vehicle to be 10years and 100k miles

Do you not think a company the size of Toyota has not clearly defined failure? It will be a sudden failure and not wear and tear on a 100k mileage ten year old car.

If that was the case there would be no aftermarket for Lexus cars

I thought Lexus would chose a reputable company. If TWG are not adhering to rules its a bad name for Lexus.

I thought my hybrid battery was classed as a sudden failure but they still refused to pay for it initially saying its the age of the vehicle. But they backtracked.

So for me wear & tear still seems a grey area and open to interpenetration and it may not be worth getting a warranty for cars that have high mileage.

So Lexus advice people to take the extended warranty to have a peace of mind.

Yes - warranties against premature failure, not against wear and tear.

Its a 10 year old car, its done over 100K miles, its wear and tear.

I would poke Lexus UK and see if they'll do anything though. Worth a try.

And failing that, i'd ring these guys

    Aftermarket?

Manufacturers don't really care once a car is out of Warranty.

I have no doubt that someone will make a thriving business of refurbing these units in the UK, i understand there is a chap who does this work on Honda hybrids already.

However, even if the bill for a fully refurbished battery pack from the dealer is £2400, i think you have to put that into context.

Imagine if you owned an equivalent executive car, it would have to be a Diesel to be an equivalent, it's fairly certain that by this age and mileage either the Diesel fuelling system might have needed work, if DPF equipped that will almost definately have needed replacement, or it could be needing a new clutch (incl DMF) or if the maker's laughable sealed for life rubbish re autogearbox servicing had been taken seriously then it might well need a box refurb.
Whatever fails on an expensive when new car is going to be expensive to fix, on a 5 series or Merc E Class a £2.4k bill for a major refit mid life would have been getting away quite lightly.

It will be good news indeed if Lexus cover this cost, i doubt many MB BMW or Jaguar owners of 10 year old models will be posting to tell you how their makers rode in on white chargers fixing things FOC willy nilly.
  • Saul,

As someone into their 5th year of Toyota extended warranty let me give you a quick crash course into how it works, it appears you have learnt an important first lesson already (and someone has alluded to what I'm going to say). The Toyota/Lexus warranty is underwritten by Toyota but is administered by the The Warranty Group aka TWG services. These are the same jokers who administer the RAC warranty. I have made many warranty claims through my extended warranty and won nearly all of them, BUT, it is always a fight. The Toyota dealer is usually spineless and ignorant of what should be said/relayed to TWG, basically they roll over too easy. Several times I've had to write a script using workshop manual diagrams and Toyota parts lists to get the service administrators (who usually know very little technically, this includes service managers) to push the issue with TWG. TWG make their money rejecting claims, they always reject first time, you must fight each time I'm sorry to say. It's not that Lexus are playing games it more like they are weak at arguing with TWG. Drop me a PM if you want examples of fights I've had with them.
