To be honest I'm surprised at your attitude dmg24 - remember to 'be nice to all moneysavers'!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are of course entitled to your own view but do you have to be so rude??
At the end of the day if the employer is behaving so badly as is described here then it is them to blame for things such as sickness! If they want to get rid of staff they should offer redundancy not treat staff so badly they leave!
Some things talked about here are very weird, at the end of the day why is taking redundancy a crime - if someone can't get a job then should either 1) get more qualifications 2) re-train 3) go work for tesco's. Why is it wrong of someone to take redundancy - pure madness! If I got offered a big redundancy payment I know that I'm in a career where I could just get a job somewhere else without too much hassle, so instead of taking the free money I would battle on and fight for those without a job - YEAH RITE!!0 -
Jazzyjeff,
I have every sympathy with someone who genuinely needs to take sick leave. I do not give out sympathy to someone who wants to go off sick in order to set up their own company. It is an abuse of the system, and a great insult to those who are genuinely ill.
Take a look at some other posts on MSE, especially those on the Depression Support thread, and the Benefits board. There you will see people that genuinely deserve help and support.
Also, I never said taking redundancy is a crime. I assume you are referring to other posts in that respect?Gone ... or have I?0 -
But there are degrees of illness ..... being unable to do one's own normal, regular job is one thing.
Being completed incapable of doing any remunerative work of any sort, is quite another.Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -

Yes but in this case the company is forcing this sort of behaviour by not giving redundancy when they should be....I agree it is very sad when people become so ill they cannot work at all but thats not really the point here. Stebiz does actually say that work is very stressful so at some point taking sick leave would even be genuine, If you soldiered on at this point you may also find yourself in the category of very sick and unable to work at all.
Yes the redundancy bit was aimed at another poster.0 -
I think it depends on your moral viewpoint but tbh if your employer doesn't give a crap about you, then they will always get some comeback. I've had to take time off sick after being harrassed and know it's not normally sometihng I would recommend to people unless they are truly ill. However, if your company treats you with a great deal of disrespect and is just trying to get you out the door without and concern for their employees' welfare, then they should accept that some employees will fight dirty back.
I would however, look at trying to negotiate a redundancy first.matched betting: £879.63

Having followed this thread for a few days I still think the OP is an !!!! with an overinflated opinion of himself who has a completely unrealistic desire to be paid to pursue goals elsewere when he has no reason to expect this0

Well I guess we are all entitled to our own opinions. I am awaiting a reply to a letter I sent requesting some severence pay and I will leave. If not it will cost the company more money for no return. I will not return and make myself sick again. I'm still on medication now. I know not all employers are the same but it has really put me off working for anybody else again. I will work for myself in the future.
As far as I see it I am making a business decision. Like they are making a business decision. There are no morals on their part and there will be no morals on mine. The reason I haven't posted for afew days is because I've just been away taking a few days holiday and doing some sightsseing.:D

I wish you luck both in terms of dealing with your stress/health issues and hopefully future business success.
If you get a pay-off from your employers, it's a bonus0 -
Does your current employer not have an HR department that has a view on these matters?
If you are off work with a stress related illness I would expect HR to be across this. Even if your are "only" taking medication for the above I would expect HR to want to know in order that they can monitor the situation to see what might be causing it and to ensure that no further damage is done to your health. The employer has a statutory duty of care here.
It may be that you can get retired on grounds of ill health. Or it may be that they offer you a less stressful position, which if you don't take will mean you are effectively resigning your post.
If your job is causing you so much grief IMHO you should just walk away.We all evolve - get on with it0 -
