  • Hi all,

I went to a$da at exactly the right time on Friday evening... I got £26.58 worth of stuff for only £1.26! That has to be my best haul yet! I've eaten like a queen since, and fed others too - they commented on how much it must've cost...!!

Will do my weekly shop on tues as that's when the ch come back home, but won't need much at all

    PG x
Grocery challenge for family of three - me, dd(12) and ds(11), feeding dp 2 or 3 x a week too. Only food, not toiletries. Jan £87.97/£100 Feb £0/£100
Frugal 2018 needed! Saving and NOT spending
  • Not been on for a while. RL too busy and I haven't been able to keep up with my budgets. However did so this morning as we got up at 8am (early for us on a sunday), washing is out on the line (cold but sunny here in London).

Shop today £24.56 and since 6/10/16 it has been £104.74 (includes today's shop). Have gone through the receipts and it was an empty fridge this morning. So mainly veggies were brought and some beer that was on offer at Morries. Going through the receipts - I can see that we have bought some items that we don't normally buy and any un-used is in the freezer including the pecorino left over from the recipe that didn't work...

In total from 25/9 is £129.36, £10.64 left til 24/10.

Will update sigs later on today.

    Have a good day all!

    SIL

    Hope all are well today.

Thanks elsiepac for the African Peanut Stew recipe. It's quite similar to my chickpea, sweet potato and spinach stew I do, to which I add Thai green curry paste - I also sneak in butter beans. Been meaning to add apricots, to give that sweet and sour taste, but my frugality stops me, might just get some cheapie sultanas - think that would work. I will defo try the peanut one when I buy more peanut butter, only £4(ish) left in this budget.

Now at £448.51/£500 with 1 week to go after taking a hungry DH to Mr T:eek: I have also spent some money on some protein powder for post training but not sure how to account for this as although we do eat it and I add it to recipes its under a different budget on my YNAB and will take some months to use up. It does feel a bit like cheating though :o

I also haven't allowed for the fact that DS and I will be at home for half term and eating from home as I am usually at work and him at childcare for this holiday.

So far this month we are averaging £112/week which is an improvement on the £158/week we averaged last month. I need to pull it back with a small shop next week which, with me been away for most of the first week of October, I should be able to do. I will use some of my time next week to batch cook some meals and snacks for DH to keep him away from the takeaway and sandwich van.
    Save £10,500 - £2673.77 - 25.5%
    Pay off £7000 - £1743 - 19.4%
    Make £2021 extra income - £99.75

Your stew sounds lovely too SD!

Re peanut butter, it's something I only really use in recipes or sauces. I like the meridian one and the absolute cheapest way to buy it is in the kilogram tubs... If you can find other people who want it too then you can get a six pack of them on Amazon that works out about £6 per tub when you include the postage. OR the H&B penny sale is the absolute bargainest way to buy two tubs! One tub last me 6 months if not more as I use so little of it, and I like the fact there are no ingredients except peanuts! I get their almond butter too - it's more expensive, but as I said, it lasts me so long and I use so little that I think it's well worth it!

I love the Meridian peanut butter too and am thinking of trying other things in their range, like you I use it so infrequently that I feel it is ok to justify the cost of it. Thank you for posting your tips about how to buy it.

OH is still ill, so today I bought him an 8 pack of Coke Zero cans, a pizza for each of us and bread at his request. Surely when you're ill you want healthy things?

Anyway we are now over budget by 13.73.

  • £190.69 spend so far this month, so not doing too badly. Alot of spends elsewhere as eldest daughter found a little house last month, so been helping where I can with little household bits.Plus granddaughter due on the 18.11, so the spends never seem to end. grocery shopping is less now she is not here, but then I feel bad that she is struggling so try and get extras in my own shopping to compensate. You never stop wanting to lend a hand, regardless of the age your children are, do you?

My wage this month is going to be a bit lower than normal, as it will be sick pay and some normal wages.I really hope November's wage is much better, as I know this month is going to be tight, making a smaller wage the same amount of month.

    Hope everybody is well.
