He's building it wrong, you are paying him to build it - there's no much more to dispute here

There's no point in letting him build it incorrectly just to avoid a dispute - and if you let him go ahead with something blatantly incorrect you are heading for trouble all the way through, he will know he has free reign to built as he pleases. You either need to get someone in to sort it out - architect/designer should be able to instruct him, presumably you don't have any formal contract in place? do you have building reg drawings or is he building from planning drawings?

I don't understand how this is word of mouth - do you have architectural plans that form the basis of your contract?

If you're not willing to ensure the extension you want is built, I'm afraid you have little room to complain.

well, give a copy to the builder - any setting out issues will be dealt with in the contract, any dispute resolution will be set out in there - the drawings are contract documents and if they are being built incorrectly USE THE CONTRACT

builder has copy of drawings, contacted build. regs. they have confirmed the drawings are correct and we can build to edge of house, and there is no law saying we need to leave gap.

problem is foundations have been laid now, can they be extended?

we have also paid lot of money as was set out in contract
    Nice to save.
