You've got me wondering about the feet.

I'm used to just getting out of bed/off the sofa/etc and putting feet on floor and start walking without thinking twice about it. For last couple of years or so I often find that, on first putting my feet on floor, that they don't feel quite "right" and I hear the bones clicking back into place in them. I am/will still carry on with my "just start walking as per normal" attitude and it might take a few strides before they are back to normal. They can sometimes give me a bit of discomfort whilst I'm actually out walking around too and I'm there walking along thinking "Discomfort in right toes go. Discomfort GO right now" whilst carrying on walking and hoping that sort of incident isnt going to go happen much longer.

Wonder if that's a menopause thing? I have been wondering whether my Vit D supplement I've just bought will put my feet back to normal.

I've got a book en route now from Amazon about joints and things - as I'm trying to track down the cause of this in order to get rid of it. Hadnt occurred to me it might be a menopause thing...

If you're carrying a couple of excess stone that is more likely the cause of feet and knee problems. I doubt it's got anything to do with the menopause given that you're well into your sixties.

Did you ever get your very high cholesterol checked out?

Yes, exactly that, it's definetly worse first thing in the morning, feels like my heels are tight and need stretching out IYKWIM, also happens when I get off the sofa if have been sitting a while? I just assumed that it was an ageing thing until locked into the fact that timing was in line with menopause? It's just such a huge change for a woman's body that who knows how it affects. Can't help thinking that if it was men that went through it there would be more dedicated research into symptoms etc.... or is that just me being cynical

Would be worth checking out whether you have plantair fasciitis. It's relatively easy to treat.

Beecher.....I think you have got this wrong.

Sounds like you need more protein for breakfast. It is protein which will keep you fuller for longer, not carbs. Weetabix is just carbs. Carbs will give you a quick energy lift which is why so many people like cereals for breakfast. However, that lift will be followed by a dip a couple of hours later.

Weetabix can also be quite hard to digest esoecially if you have stomach problems. (The clue is in the name - ie it's wheat).

A good dollop of full fat Greek yoghurt, topped with nuts and seeds should give you sufficient protein to see you through, add some fruit for carbs. You could always have a bit of cheese for extra protein if needed. I carry around a couple of baby bels or some nuts for snack attacks.

I used to believe that I would be hungry if I didn't load up on carbs, ie cereals and toast for breakfast. I thought that was healthier than bacon and eggs. I was always hungry a couple of hours later.

By 10 0 clock I would be hitting the biscuits or crumpets (more carbs). By 1 o clock I would eating sandwiches, more biscuits, or cake. By mid afternoon I would be both exhausted and starving and craving sweet sugary snacks.

Carbs are addictive, they mess with your blood sugar levels and lead to energy highs followed by dips when your blood sugar levels crash.

Protein releases energy more slowly, will keep you feeling fuller for longer, maintains a healthy blood sugar level and avoids Insulin highs and lows. You should eat some protein with every meal.

If you really feel that yoghurt won't be enough then try eggs. A two egg omelette, with added cheese and a bit of chopped ham - if you are vegetarian then skip the ham and Add tomato or mushrooms. An omelette is a much better breakfast than weetabix and doesn't take much longer to prepare.

I only suggested yoghurt because it contains good bacteria to help with your stomach problems. Greek yogurt is also quite "soothing" to eat iyswim.

You could always have yoghurt and berries for an evening snack.

  • Re. Probiotics, I was at the London permaculture festival last weekend and a lady there did a demo making sauerkraut which is apparently full of good stuff for bad guts if home made - shop bought is pasteurised and no good. She said you need to start small and build up in eating it or you get wind.

I've gathered that yer conventional shop-bought sauerkraut is one thing and the "real deal" is another. I've had both and find I can get the "real deal" type stuff from genuine health food shops (ie the type run by aging hippies - not H*lland & B*rrett ones). I don't know ..but it may be possible to get some from Polish groceries if you have one nearby.

A Polish friend brought me some back from a recent trip back there and it tastes nearer to health food shop ones, than the conventional shop stuff and they think it's the "real deal". I've made some before now on a course about that sort of thing and thought I didnt like sauerkraut until I tried that and thought "That's a whole different ballgame".

Not sure how well my home-grown cabbage is going to do for it - just been brushing teeny little green caterpillars off mine:rotfl: - but I do have a few sources of supply of organic veggies round here if need be.

Apparently for every 1lb of extra weight you carry, it adds 4 lbs of extra pressure on to the knee joint.

I'm sure I get most things wrong lessonlearned ;)

I leave at 7am so time's really precious to me, Weetabix seems to be working fine for me and keeps me going until 1pm when I next have the opportunity to eat. Have salad then and fruit in the afternoon - I know my diet's not perfect but I'm still a size 8 and think life's too short to try to get everything perfect. :) Stomach's absolutely perfect at the moment so I'm changing nothing for now:)
  • Size 8 - sighs enviously, as I've never been that sort of size. Still - could be worse. I'm size 14 and a perfectly healthy BMI - so it's only from the looks pov that I'm that bothered. Not bad for early 60s.:)

Right - have had my coffeebreak and the garden calls again. No wonder I'm getting a pretty toned backside by now:rotfl:

I'm only 5 ft 2 though so always been wee - never really been that bothered with food though funny how deciding to give up sugar makes it seem so much more inviting!:D

Enjoy gardening - surprise surprise it is raining here again. It is warm rain though which I suppose should be a positive.

And hope you didn't think I was just dismissing your advice. It's something to keep in mind if it flares up again
