I cant even begin to verbalise how much that statement gets right on my tatas.
Maybe it was not your intention but you do realise how utterly sexist that came across.
It's 2016 after all, and the thought that my other half (who's not down trodden by the way) would have any imput on my vehicle of choice would astound not only me but him!
Now i realise some men think they have monopoly on this driving lark, but hello.... welcome to the 21st century.

oh dear I was going to do a right wind up on that but i'm in a good mood so will let you off

Nothing sexist at all I would of said the same if it had been a woman discussing how her husband had banged up the smaller car, with the exception of "you want to put him in a bus"

Size is totally deceptive on these types of vehicle, i drive a Juke and its like a reverse Tardis, looks big on the outside yet you cant swing a cat in it.

that's true, also been a while since my friend sold his 1 series but a neighbour in the village has an evoque and it looks much larger than I remember the 1 series looking was very surprised by those stats

The Evoque is a good 20cm wider than most compacts, doesn't sound much but it reduces the gap between parked cars to feeler-gauge levels. Ah well, it's a free world, you can always move to the US or OZ if big is your thing.

Does everybody drive a compact car?

A 1 Series is not exactly a large car.

I did a quick Google and CarWow states that a current Mondeo is over 2100 mm wide.

That makes it wider than an Evoque.

    What car do you drive?

Because according to you we should only own small ones.

All cars are bigger than they used to be, compare a mk1 Clio with a mk4.

Then compare a mk1 Mondeo with a mk5, or an mk4 for that matter.

An Evoque is not that big, I am personally glad that the OPs missus wants to buy a British engineered and built vehicle. Much better than a characterless X3.

I have a much simpler prejudice - sole-occupant drivers parking their oversized '4x4' looking things in supermarket car parks and my company car park with narrow bays just not designed for this fashion of vehicle.

Luckily I am still slim/fit enough to squeeze myself into my own car when boxed in by one of these while minding not to scratch either car when opening the door.

There, I've said it now on behalf of anyone else tempted to make the same comment to 'Missus wants an Evoque'.

After reading this post in the context of you next post I can only assume you are in some way jealous of those who chose to spend their money on what they like.

Spending money is not against the ethos of MSE, buying a car with good residuals is MSE. Buying British supports UK jobs and the Economy (I don't care if Tata own JLR now, somebody always own a Company so who cares who it is, better Tata than Ford.

At least Tata have grown the Business and invested properly.

Or not... what a strange thing to say.:rotfl:

Like a lot of MSEers who seem to drive low budget cars I could buy an Evoque-priced car tomorrow for cash but choose not to. Ever since I downsized from a Vectra to a Kia Ceed I've been a happier driver, each cm in width lost is a bit of happiness.
Atm I'm trying to put OH off getting an overfat Mini in place of her current Citroen C1.
I like driving big vehicles - Ford Transit vans are a lot of fun - but will save owning anything big till I've retired to a suitably dimensioned country.
