Cheapest option in the long run will be BMW 1 and sell the missus!0

What sort of mileage are you talking?
Less than 15-20k a year and you are looking at petrol, or suffering potential expensive problems once the diesel system starts having problems.0 -

That's another exaggeration. My wife has a 40d X5. She's had it 4 years from new and it doesn't do a quarter of the mileage I do in my E220. No issues at all with the car as far as diesel 'system'. The car does get a fairly regular 30 mile trip, but I do far more miles in my car. I do 25k a year. Hers is around 7 - 9k.0 -
12-15k a year. The wife's commute is along a motorway and typically 35-45 mins driving. Her current 1-series is also a diesel.0

To answer the question, I reckon your best bet is to try and buy a 1 or 2 year old one for cash, drive the price as low as you can, and then if you want to drop it 6 months down the line, there won't be too big a hit. (Landrover warranty is 3 years, you will need it unless things have changed a lot)
Any brand new car that you are looking to get rid of at 6 months old is going to cost a packet as you will have to pay the depreciation whether by lease, pcp or hp..I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Perfectly acceptable for a diesel. It's about the type of driving rather than the total mileage.d0nkeyk0ng wrote: »12-15k a year. The wife's commute is along a motorway and typically 35-45 mins driving. Her current 1-series is also a diesel.0 -

What they failed to spot was that 20% of the Mercedes price meant you could buy a cheap Lada and scrap it after 5 years and still have money left over.
The Mercedes may only lose 20% but that 20% was a greater vale than the others cars cost.
What does the Evoque lose over 3 years £4k a year?
Don't know how much this was new but that is the kind of spec I would want.
So £27k after nearly 4years.

You have also forgotten that to you can't really compare a Mercedes ownership experience to a Lada one.
In fact I haven't seen an Evoque for under £18k used, though I haven't really been looking that hard.
Even basis models with high miles are close to £19k.

All cars depreciate, not just the Evoque.
So my only consideration when buying is what their depreciation is like.
If you can afford it then I can't see an issue.

Don't agree.
It is the driving pattern that is important not type of miles.
We have a Picanto and a Berlingo.
I don't have a diesel because most of the miles are round town. And the fact I bought the Berlingo from a mate as I needed a cheap car and it happened to be petrol. But the Picanto was a conscious decision to avoid diesel.
It has done 8k miles since the end of February and very few have been outside a built up area, so it would have needed a lot of Regen runs if we had gone diesel.
If your usage is compatible then a diesel is fine for even 5k miles a year. Especially since it is not unusual for the petrol versions of vehicles to not be that much cheaper than diesel, in fact they are often more expensive. Especially with Jaguars and LandRovers. (Will have to check on the Evoque)
The Evoque is one car that I genuinely would like to own. I like the look of them and much prefer the styling to the X3, Q3 or other rivals from Kia, Hyundai, Ford etc.0 -

Why on earth would LR fit those ridiculous 'sports style' seats with fakey harness slots and idiotic wheels over tiny brakes like that
Crazy. Looks like an accident in Halfords.0
