    The only viable approach is to download the source code for Linux Mint and compile the OS yourself, that way you know you're safe.

    Not sure why you would do that. Perfectly safe installing Linux Mint the regular way. http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Linux-Mint

    How do you know there's nothing malicious in the source code?

    If you have a publisher's PGP key, you can often verify downloads (whether source or ISO images) using that.

    I would know, but it would take a day or two(years) to be sure, but I am not as quick I was.
