Linux is fine until the one day you need to manually do something and its why did i bother. a few clicks in windows and that would be done.

But i wont be movig to windows 10 until my personal programs are no longer required...

I don't know... I find Linux far easier and more logical than Windows. If you know what you're trying to do and you want to be in control, Linux is easier to use.

And in Linux, things can always be scripted. With Windows, a lot of the time, you have to interact with a GUI.

But it all depends on the distro. I never got on with the Linux distros that are aimed at Windows users (Ubuntu, Mint, etc.). They're too bloated and try to hide their inner-workings from the user.

If you just want a PC that works, and you don't really care how, then Windows hides a lot of the complex stuff from the user and is "easy" for non-techies to interact with.

Still I will stick with Fedora and W10 dual boot , and VMs of each under each etc.

I have a ton of VM's. Although my system is old and its struggles with 3 or 4 running.

I bounce around between Mac, Windows 7 and Ubuntu.
I use Ubuntu a lot; I've not tried Mint, so I might have a play.

(I make my living using Red Hat, CentOS and Amazon Linux.)

Well, Windows has PowersHell, which is functionally similar to the UNIX/Linux shells (though very different to use!).

However only one DE, take your pick for 'nix. For all it's sins I still go for KDE on Opensuse as KDE is the most customisable DE I know of.

w10 with classic shell start menu and a few tweeks to privacy settings for me. The defaults are shocking, but its free! Next best win7. Hated 8

Oh yeah -- sounds interesting. Microsoft have finally given in to the power of Unix shells!

KDE's pretty good. I quite liked SuSE many years back too.

I'm totally hooked on Arch Linux now, though! I really like the speed and simplicity of XFCE as a desktop environment -- it's quite WinXP-like.

Windows 10 would probably be quite a good OS if it gave users (administrators) more control.

Assuming the awful Windows 10 is off the agenda. Which Windows os version would you reccomend?

I also heard a rumour that some of them are free these days. Is that true? A quick price check suggests that they vary massively. ..ie i saw windows 7 for both 20 € and 130 €

Avoid Windows altogether and put on a decent free safe operating system. As I mentioned my current favourite is Linux Mint cinnamon edition but there are many others that are popular including variants from Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, PCLinuxOS. A good guide to the main Linux distributions is this one http://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major
