We were going to start a new thread following the referendum. So I have decided to bite the bullet. I really hope everyone who posted on the old preparedness thread will continue to contribute their wit, wisdom and occasional witterings (that's me, then) as we try to discern our paths through the uncertain but very interesting times that lay ahead
Edit
several people have pointed out that it would be good to have a link to the old thread which contains a huge amount of useful information. A very worthwhile read.
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4065593
I'm also posting the very first post from that thread which was set up by Vanoonoo to whom enormous thanks are due from all the Preppers. It has a number of links which I'm sure people will find useful
Preparedness for when
the boy scouts among us will be prepared, but are the rest of us ready?
IMPORTANT NOTE: this thread is a resource for those who want to prepare in an old style way for a variety of scenarios - anything from c0-0p running out of milk to a full scale breakdown in society as we know it - if you don't think you can cope with this sort of discussion please don't read any further! it is not meant to alarm or ridicule, just allow open discussion in a frank but sometimes lighthearted way - that said, all constructive view points are welcome so please join in!
please see a great post from GQ about some thoughts of a home without water and what we would need https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/57006775#Comment_57006775
we've got the storecupboard thread and I can see many people talk about Grab and Go (GAG)/bail/bug out bags (BOB) and getting ready for when the proverbial hits the fan
this is what got me thinking - cross posting sorry but thanks to pugsley

I wondered if it would be good to have a more detailed thread not just about store cupboards for food but for other items, perhaps (to keep it old style), along the lines of air raid shelter/WWII preparedness, with the necessary modern additions
apologies if this has already been done, feel free to merge but I'd rather stay old style if possible to keep it real!

Hurray, I'm one of the first cos I was typing when you did this! Thanks maryb!

I find a mattock very useful for clearing big clumps of couch grass on the allotment. Why is it I turn my back and it's waist high but try and reseed a bare patch on the lawn at home and zilch! It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Thank you for the new thread Mary.
Currently trying to grow enough to supplement my salad and veg shop. Making notes of what is susccessful (or not) for next year. I'm also trying to grow enough flowers to decorate the tables at dd3s 2017 wedding, so am doing some trial runs of those to see what I can grow in enough quantities.SPC~12 ot 124

Well as a remain voter who is terrified about the consequences of leaving the EU (remember we are now a country WITH NO PLAN, an actual country with no idea what's going to happen for years to come or who is going to lead us through it), I'm afraid I don't agree with the "Brave New World" element of the thread title. Can we have something more generic please?
Ps I read the prepping threads when I can but don't post unless a certain poster really winds me up :rotfl:Life is too short to waste a minute of it complaining about bad luck. Find joy in the simple things, show your love for those around you and be grateful for all that you have.0 -
I tried to grow flowers for a big anniversary party but what I really needed in quantity was gypsophila and I didn't start it going in time. It really bulks out a smaller quantity of blooms.
I went to the Knitting and Stitching show back in March and bought a gadget for making bows. A nice elaborate ribbon bow also makes a smaller bunch of blooms look impressive when tied onto the side of the pews in the church or maybe tied round a napkin for a pretty table setting. This gadget made double bows very easily.
It was quite funny at the show. It was at Olympia and you had to get on a branch line from Earl's Court. However one of the cross London Overground lines also stops there. As our tube train pulled in, so did one of the Overground trains. The doors opened and hundreds (literally) of ladies of a certain age poured out and made their way as one across the zebra crossing to the exhibition centre. We held up the traffic for ages and I overheard one driver mutter that he had never seen anything so terrifying in his life:rotfl::rotfl:It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Sorry you don't like the title Princess. I used it because we had talked about a new thread with that title and people seemed to think it was a good one - in an ironic way!
Canvassing opinions here - do people think we should change it and if so, suggestions pleaseIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
I'm not sure I've been on the thread long enough to have an opinion but I like the title Mary, it was the one that was suggested and I think agreed on shortly before the ref took place.SPC~12 ot 124

Given the fact that so many on the old thread voted to leave the EU I think I can guess which way the canvassing of opinions will go. I suppose it's one way to put a positive spin on it but for some of us it really has created the most horrendous Shtf scenario when there wasn't one before. I see from the last few posts of the old thread that a few remain voters haven't been posting recently because they felt their view was unpopular with the majority. Maybe we remainers need our own thread?. I'm joking by the way.....

I think the new thread title is fine.
There has only been one comment against it - by someone who very rarely posts.0 -
I would hate to think people aren't posting because they think their views are unpopular, we are NOT a clique who all agree with each other.
There is a full spectrum of views from Remainers and Leavers and Scottish Nationalists. Plus we are getting some interesting insights from Mila in the US.
We all share an interest in trying to work out what we can do about things to smooth the paths of ourselves and our familiesIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0
