The go-ahead has been given for a group action:
Sofa-injured can bring cases
6th, June 2008
A Judge at Nottingham Crown Court has given people who were injured by leather sofas the go-ahead for group action.
The Honourable Mr Justice Treacy at Nottingham Crown Court has filed a Group Litigation Order against firms that supplied the sofas, Argos, Land of Leather and Walmsley Furnishing.
More than 1000 people have lodged legal proceedings after the leather sofas manufactured in China appeared to cause a range of symptoms including allergies, rashes and burns, possibly caused by chemical sachets fitted inside the furniture. The first claims were lodged in October 2007 and the issue was highlighted again by a BBC Watchdog programme aired in February.
The suites were Pia or Bari models which Argos withdrew and recalled in October 2007 offering a refund or replacement.
Lawyer Christian Shotton of Russell Jones & Walker – who are dealing with more than 700 sofa-injury claims – believes that many of the sofa related injuries could have been avoided if action had been taken sooner.
He said: “The first reports of these sofa related injuries were made last year and yet some retailers were still selling the products as a recently as a few weeks ago. Although there are now hundreds of claimants with very real injuries, Trading Standards have failed to act and have still have not issued a product recall notice.0 -

Can you find a makers label on the sofa? Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0 -
I know it has been a while since this has been talked about but I didn't think anything of it. But my daughter has severe echsma and we bought our sofa from argos in april 2007. I'm not sure what to look for on the label and could do with some help. We have been to the skin specialist on a few occasions and the treatment doesn't seem to be working. Having heard about this I would seem to make sense!0

Hi trigger - look for the makers name on the label. The sofas/chairs that have given trouble are made by Linkwise, in China.
Update: BBC Watchdog 13.10.08 is saying that sofas made by Eurosofas are also causing problems.

"a devastating blow for victims"
Not good news for those that purchased from Land of Leather.
Has anyone who purchased from Argos had any compensation yet? I couldn't even get my seller to take the chairs back, let alone get a refund or compensation. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0 -
Update on this story - good news at last, for some.

I've still not received an offer of a replacement, refund or even an apology from the shop I bought from, The One Stop Sofa Shop. Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!0 -
Can anyone help me track down a list of batch numbers of the sofas affected? (I've seen the PDF a few posts up from this one already but it doesn't help us as we can't recall the name of the sofa we own (from Walmsleys) and as its just the names that are given for sofas from that shop, we're a bit stuck as to where to go from here.
I have a batch number from underneath our suite but can't find a name of the style anywhere.
Anyone able to help? Am happy to post the batch number up to see if anyone recognises it?!0 -
Just bought a new leather sofa bed for my spare room, so we dont use it much at the moment. It is a Fernando sofa from Argos/Homebase. It is absolutely gorgeous, but when my son has been in there with his friends, he has an allergic reaction with his eyes running, but not the rash that was reported several years ago with sofas.
I happen to know this sofa was manufactured in eastern europe, not China. Just wondering if anyone else has had this response?
Not yet done anything about it.
Advice please...
Thanks :-)0
