Walk 1000 miles

Welcome back, MallyGirl. You are doing really well. February is a short month anyway, I shall do as much as I can, and make it up in March. I hope by April the weather is getting a bit better and I can do some multi day walks, can't wait to get out there again.
I got the bug for long distance walking when I retired, put a rucksack on my back, got a train to Blackpool, and walked back to North Lincolnshire. 137 miles in 7 days. I can average 19 - 20 a day, depending on the terrain. On the last day of that walk, I had an overnight stop at Selby and walked back to the Humber bridge. I walked for 13 hours. I was gobsmacked when I found it was 30 miles.
I have done several since, Morecambe to the Humber Bridge was 162 miles in 9 days. Humber Bridge to Penrith was 150 miles in 8 days 4 hours.
Now planning what I am going to do this year. It's good to push yourself because you never know what you can do till you try. I hope I can keep up the momentum, even though I am a few years older now.

Thanks Ilona.
I would love to do more but we have a teenage daughter with a ridiculously hectic life (our own fault for letting her sign up for so much) which needs lots of driving her to and from things. When the weather is kinder she can cycle to some activities but they are too far away for her to walk.
We also both still work full time - its the big 50 this year so retirement is some way off sadly.
We go to the Lake District pretty much every year and did most of Hadrian's wall with friends a couple of years ago. We stayed in a cottage in the middle and just did chunks each day - very civilised. We think we might do the Coast to Coast, or something similar, when DD disappears off for 3 weeks in Nepal next year with school. As soon as she sets off on any D of E expeditions we are lacing up the bootsI’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

Hi Mally. The Lake District can be pretty tough walking, less miles covered. I love it there but don't get across as often as I would like. Grange over Sands is a nice place to walk, a bit flatter, on the edge of the Lakes.
It will be hard for you to find the time to walk lots of miles, but no matter, some mileage is better than none. Could you find 35 minutes each day, two miles can be achieved in that time. Can you walk out of your door and go a walk?
I finished January on 100 miles, pleased with that. Short month this month so won't be as much.

I've just got back from a couple of days walking in the lake district. We averaged 12 miles a day. You really can't do much more than that at this time of year. Not if you are climbing (We did around 1200m climbing each day)“Time is intended to be spent, not saved” - Alfred Wainwright0

I walk 2 to 2.5 miles in the morning before work with my dogs so it should only be a matter of topping up with a bit extra at the weekends. Hopefully we can fit in a bigger walk here and there.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans

Hello all
Ashamed to say that i completely forgot that i started this thread!!
I reached the 1000 miles on a hike on the Sandstone trail overlooking Helsby last Saturday
Very happy that i did the challenge inside a year (if not a calender year) and had some great experiences and took in some fantastic views
I have already started again for this year and will be striving (or should that be striding) to complete the 1000 in 2017
Me and my better half have quite a few walks planned, we are doing a recce this weekend in Rivington for one that i plan on leading very soon, we are looking to 'bag' Kinder Scout, the Yorkshire 3 peaks and start on the Wainwrights this year and i am proud to say that she has already got 150 miles under her belt already since the beginning of January
I will ensure i check this thread regularly now seeing as it was me that started it!!

Some lovely areas there
I have started doing the wainwrights (Picked up 3 at the weekend taking me up to 105 completed. Sadly not much time this year to do more. Maybe have to have a concerted effort at them next year.
Yorkshire 3 peaks is always a nice walk although the 2 times I have done them the weather has been pants both times
As for kinder scout I have never been up it, but have contoured along the from and dropped down to edale YHA. I am actually doing a couple of days from Castleton YHA in Mayand will again contour the front of kinder as part of a half marathon before heading round the Mam Tor - lose hill ridge. (Heartily recommend that ridge if you get time.

Checking in. I am up to 121 miles since Jan 1st. Trying to fit in a few extra miles as this is a short month. I walked into town, five miles, did think about walking back but decided to bus back. It was getting dark and some of it is across fields and along busy main roads.

I was at 116 by the end of week 5 (4th Feb) so slightly ahead of schedule. Feb is a bit of an unknown as I have a week's holiday which will be fairly outdoorsy but might not rack up that many miles - I have no idea what our hosts have planned. Then I have 4 days away on a course. I plan to get on the treadmill in the hotel gym as I don't want to be walking round an unfamiliar city on my own after work.I’m a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Pensions, Annuities & Retirement Planning, Loans
