Virgin Media retention deals (post your haggling successes)

  • I've been out of my 12 month Broadband only deal for 4 days - VIVID 100 at £24.24 for 12 months, now it's jumped up to £34.24.

Phoned up Virgin just now and had a friendly enough representative who offered me a deal of £26.24 for 12 months after some discussion (said it would normally go up to £29.99 but he could get me the £26.24 as a special offer).

When I said I wanted to pay less than £25 he got a bit funny about it - when I asked if I could take the VIVID 50 he said that would be £27 or so.

I cancelled and he wasn't happy about it, said nobody would call to offer me another deals and I'd need to call them to call off the cancellation within the next 30 days. Said I'd not get any better deal.

Not sure I believe that - should I expect a letter or call from retentions?

They’ve said the same to me a few times over the years...yet Retentions have always called within a few days (they don’t write to you). It’s just a tactic to try and make you sign up there and then to a more expensive deal.

Cheers, let's see what happens next.

Ended my contract mid-August, ex set Virgin Media up in her name, no £50 credit, though was promised it, is it worth pursuing?

When you say promised it, by who? Through refer a friend? Yes it is worth pursuing if it was part of your agreed deal.

This is not true for everyone now. I used this tactic successfully for several years until earlier this spring. I requested cancellation but did not get a retentions call and lost my verve and cancelled the cancellation with about a day to go. I've tried again just a few weeks ago but with less than a week to go, it's not looking promising and might have to reverse the request again. I have found out that I download just under 300Gig per month and suspect that they might not want to keep people who use that much data.

By way of comparison I only use c30GB per month.

Have you tried the last resort option which is to sign up with another provider like BT and apply to port your number? From what I’ve heard that often initiates a call from the ‘ports’ team at Virgin which are able to offer same / similar deals as outbound retentions (may all be part of same team?). Because you have a 14 day cooling off period then that means you can cancel the BT sign up once Virgin has called or if they haven’t and you want to stay anyway. Think it’s pretty quick and easy to sign up with BT online.
  • Just had the email saying that my broadband and phone are going up £2/month even though I only negotiated a new contract at the end of June.

Going to be on the phone to cancel again ..
