As has been mentioned previously TSB drops their interest rate from 3% to 1.5% today and only up to £1500 from £2000.

if any one has a empty Nationwide account like me, (I used it for a year for the 5% rate but then they dropped their rates to 1%) it may be worth transferring your excess £500 from TSB to NW.

I've done this with both my TSB accounts this morning until I can set up another decent paying account...just an idea rather than have zero interest in the interim :)

Yes I put an auto transfer on my TSB account for today - going along in a bit to check that its done
Ive stopped using my TSB for contactless now it is no longer paying me £5 a month :(

Have a look at the less well known building societies like Principlality and Leeds BS - Ive got monthly savers with both of these and I think they have bonds and ISAs - all can be done online.

Ive also got Tesco bank on the list to investigate - up to £???? in a current account will give you ?% - might be somewhere to put the excess TSB

I am gearing myself up to buy premium bonds - Ive only ever done this once before decades ago at the post office ...

Have you checked out virgin esaver. There was recently a monthly esaver 2 with 2.25% and I read somewhere you can have a 3rd 2.25% account if you open in a branch.
I was wondering about this and asked about it over on the banking thread and someone suggested Tesco current account at 3% up to £3K.
So Tesco current or virgin e-saver @ 2.25% as suggested by gocat earlier.

I know some of you enjoy going on cruises - see the article to the right about Swan Hellenic and Voyages of Discovery have gone bust:

Hopefully none of your holiday plans are affected.

As a suggestion, change your existing NW to FlexAccount, then open a new FlexD (get referred by a family member, or refer them - you get £100 each ... oh, and go through TCB/Q if they have cashback (so register for refer a friend, make sure you use that email address to register, go through TCB/QW to sign up ;)).

I am about to go back in for a new FlexD for the 5%, just waiting for TCB/Q to have cashback too (the account offers 5% interest for one year on up to £2500, then drops).

they also had their own brand mature cheddar 1kg for £1. it was marked up at £4 and I was going to buy one anyway but when it went through at £1 I went back for the other 3.

Also suggest Bank of Sc0tland - sign up for classic, tick yes for V4ntage - you get 3% on balances between £3,000-5,000.

I have it on good authority ;) you can have three of those. If you have a H4lifax account, if I recall the same login details work for the BoS site, so once you are in there, it is very quick to complete the application(s). They then show in your H4lifax online account too for ease of banking.

Some conditions (transfer £1k in per month, 2 DDs required, no transfer in requirement so no need for a donor account).

They (plus T and NW) haven't yet dropped their rates or made any announcement to that I am aware of - it may be that given rates are likely to stay steady or go up they have decided to hold their nerve for market advantage given San, Hali, TSB and Lloyds all dropped their rates significantly (more than the interest rate cut) and must be losing customers in droves where people can find a better home for their money.
