although these things cannot ever happen as an A level student I got a rollocking from my Dad (also my bank manager) because my account was over drawn. How I asked? He admitted he didn't know but would get the full details next day.
In those days family accounts under 18 yrs were staff accounts and my Dad had been called by a local director and asked to explain - he had been most embarrassed.
Next evening Dad brought home a print out showing my account was overdrawn by cheques paid. I hadn't written any and went and got my cheque book which was new and unused.
Dad went back to work next day and further investigated. Someone else's cheques - half a dozen or so - had been taken out of my account rather than their own. They did have a similar name (G G initials rather than my R G and same surname) but conclusion was bank error or printing on cheque book that is machine read not good enough to decipher correct account info and somehow charged to mine.
I got money back and a letter of apology (from my dad!!).

All I'm saying is bank systems are not perfect, they can and do make mistakes. I've had a cash machine give me £20 short before now and complained, bank just paid it into my account a few days later, no explanation, no apology.

I think the local thing is throwing everyone, family member or someone with access to the house is statistically the most likely culprit so bank will stick to this if they can. I wonder if they have had any other complaints about that machine or if they have any kind of system where a withdrawal without any location information is allocated to cardholders local cash machine? I don't know, again just wondering.

As you are certain card wasn't used look at bank systems errors as possible cause, possibly with some human intervention from bank staff.

From a completely different angle, was the cashpoint used covered by cctv ? could the bank show cctv from the time the withdrawal was made ?

I did think that a fish-eye lens camera was pretty common in ATMs so this may be worth pursuing with the bank, but is only really of any help if you recognise the person making the withdrawal. It also doesn't prove that you didn't give your card and PIN to whoever it was.

True, but if cctv shows it was the OP's girlfriend, then he has some thinking to do with regard to the relationship.

It's unlikely to show anyone else.

Online statement reads around 2.15 pm. At the time I was home. on my PC.

Thats a clever statement, they dont have times on my Lloyds statement, just the date and location of the ATM...

I can see how the problem with the cheques occurred, and I know that it's possible for an incorrect sum to be paid out

But every ATM has a location - there's no such thing as a default local cash machine

To make an ATM withdrawal a card and a PIN is needed. Bank systems don't just generate ATM withdrawals.

And the only human intervention that a bank staff member could make would be to get the card and the PIN.

So bank error is very, very unlikely. Nothing is impossible, but in this case, almost impossible.

  • I find the OP's story to be highly implausable for several reasons, most of which have been highlighted in this thread.
