Lloyds fraud

Options
hello everyone,
Hopefully someone will have a bit of advice for me.
I recently (last week) opened a current account with Lloyds bank. After few days I received the card and then the pin code.
Memorized the code and left the card in my house.
The card has never left my home, no one has had access to it, it was stored in a secured place.
Yesterday on the 12th of June, A transaction for 20£ appeared on my online statement taken from a cash point near by.
I called the bank and stopped the card.
I called the fraud department and ask to investigate so I could have my money back but they refused the claim telling me it must have been me withdrawing the cash.
I have never left the house, the card has never been used by me and i don't need to pretend it wasn't me.
I am concerned now to the point of considering closing the account. 16 years with Barclays and I have never had any problems.
What concern me is the fact the this could happen again but for a much larger amount.
I'd really appreciate some advice and if there is a way to recover the lost 20£.
thank you.

Given the short timescale by far the most likely explanation is that it was your card that was used with the PIN you were sent, so it's not surprising that Lloyds have taken that line.

I believe, but could be wrong, that the chip includes a counter for the number of times it has been used in a C&P device, which would include an ATM. If that is the case then your position is that the count would be zero, so it might be possible to return the card to Lloyds to be examined, and if it is indeed zero they should return your £20.

Plus, what did the OP do with the PIN notification.

He says he memorised the code...... But what happened next. Did he tear the letter up into tiny shreds..... Or did he leave it on the mantelpiece.

Why leave the card at home?
Don't you use it for shopping or cash withdrawals?

    thanks everyone for your replies.
The pin was memorized and burnt.
I live in my house with my Girlfriend and no one else. She hasn't used it, she doesn't even know where the card is.
I left the card at home because I don't use the Lloyds account, I just "park" money there for their interest rate.
Thank you very much for the tip about the counting of the chip. You are correct, if there is indeed such a thing it should count zero because I never used the card. I was meant to go to a Lloyd ATM to change the pin they sent me but I never did.
I would like to point out that Luckly for me I don't need those 20£, what concern me is to understand how is this even possible. If I had used the card someone may have been able to forge it, but the card, as I stated, NEVER left my home since I got few days ago. Was someone able to forge it before it was sent? could the cashpoint machine have made a mistake?
If my intention was to scam the bank I would have said I'd lost the card and someone else may have used it. what really upsets me, it's to be accused of something I never did, as basically Lloyds has done.

Where is the card now ?

Can't see a fraudster taking £20, what was your balance ?

If the card is back at your house, there's only one explanation.
  • The card is in my home. It NEVER left my house. I've obviously blocked it and requested a new one. My balance had just 3 transactions, that's why I was able to spot it straight away. First 1 pound in from my other account, just to check everything was ok. Then the rest of the money. then 20£ out from a cashpoint on Sunday afternoon. I never left my house Sunday.
Again, could the card have been forged before been sent to me, cause if so it's really concerning.

For £20. Highly unlikely. How did they get your pin number?

The ATM used was close by. Suggesting somebody else saw it and has used the card. Not something you wish to consider but the probable truth.
  • what if 20£ were taken in the hope I didn't notice so a small amount could have been continuously taken out now and then? No one would have known I was not going to use the account at any cashpoint and therefore been able to spot it straight away.
