Expect daughter to live overseas for a year?

  • Thanks all.

Husband and I have discussed. Agreed will not be included in letter of wishes but that instead we will speak to my cousin / family and husband's family to let them know that if daughter expresses such a wish it should be encouraged / considered as appropriate at the time. It seems very unlikely to me that anyone would think it appropriate while she is school-aged, given the disruption it would cause; I trust my cousin's and husband's siblings judgement.

There are no thoughts for her to go to NZ as a child without us if we are alive. Husband has reiterated that he isn't harbouring any secret wishes to move back, even temporarily.

We are fortunate in that we are able to go there to visit every year or two, his parents are in good health and get over here every year too, and 1 sibling + family came over last year. It can be a little frustrating to use so much annual leave / holiday money the same way each year when I might want to go somewhere more exciting, but this is the way it is!

That seems a reasonable solution. But perhaps if you hanker sfter occasionally going somewhere different there is no reason why both families can!t arrange to meet up occasionally in a new holiday location, That way you still all get to see each other but also get to enjoy some different surroundings.

True. A South African friend (living in England with her husband and children) holidayed in Austria over Christmas with her in-laws (flew in from SA) and her SIL and family who live in Oz. Families are often more far flung these days.
