  • I find that the hairy trousers/sackcloth and ashes approach just makes me want to break out and buy all of the things. There has to be a medium ground.

Hope the roof fix goes well.
  • :rotfl: Hairy trousers. Itchy. :rotfl:

  • A good day today except for the accidental mars bar.;) and having to pay for parking as the work car park was full.

I have decided to do a daily positive thing to improve self or home. It may be a really small thing like a facial or something larger like DIY. Whatever it is it must add to the general quality of life. Its catch up time as i have neglected everything.

A few bits to do tonight to prepare for tomorrow's day off. I would like the basics done tonight freeing up time tomorrow. But first it's time for the daily bag.

    Is it payday yet?

Great idea. I might steal it for myself :)

  • Last night my positive move was pottering around for an hour doing jobs, time when I usually would have been attached to pinterest pining over lovely decor and wondering when mine would be done. Anyway I got loads done, it was ridiculous. There is something about the autumn and winter nights when it's dark outside and I get the urge to work inside the house. The result was this morning I came down to a tidy sitting room, a tidy bathroom and a tidy kitchen with a shiny, sparkly sink. Oh my goodness, how much calmer I felt as a result. Also it means today I can get on with the meatier jobs which need doing rather than waste time washing up and cleaning the kitchen.

Today the forecast seems to be holding up as dry until late afternoon so after dropping DS at school this morning I'm popping to bee and que for supplies for the roof. I have some compliments vouchers DH was given at work which I can spend there so it will be minimal cost too.:j:T this morning will be spend getting covered in a black, tar substance. :):D I really do need to start doing regular maintenance on my house rather than waiting for disaster to hit. Anyway the roof does need replacing but this repair will be fine until I have saved to get it done.

I also need to take down the curtains in the dining room to repair the battening the pole is attached to. Hurray for gorilla glue. I might just go and take those down now actually while DS is snoozing on the settee.

Anytime left over before DS comes home from school will be spent doing lots of small little repair jobs.

I have also made another list of jobs to be done.

    HIGH COST JOBS
Tree to be felled - search in progress as tree surgeon let me down.
Rewiring - next on the list
New windows - need to start a savings pot
New kitchen - long term plan but I now have no draws and steps sons girlfriend broke the sink unit with her big @rse. Inswear she did it on purpose.
Re carpeting on stairs and landing plus redecoration. The stairwell is stupidly high and it's one paint job out of my reach.....literally.;)
A new fire and fireplace in sitting room.
All the drainpies need replacing but see below * Houses look so much nicer with tidy guttering. Mines all over the place and some of it is grey, now painted black and peeling.

    MORE ACHIEVEABLE JOBS
New basin in bathroom. Stepson broke it and it has a massive spider crack. I should be able to get one with a cabinet underneath for about £90 which will help with the storage issue too.
A million small repair jobs including:
Fixing the pipe outside which comes from the kitchen sink.
Sticking back wallpaper. It's not being redecorated until rewired.
Glossing hall woodwork. Will this ever be done.
Caulking around the ceiling in the lobby.
Replacing some floorboards in the dining room.
Removing fire and fireplace in dining room - 60's specials. Actually the whole room needs sorting so I should move it to the high cost area. Actually the whole house could do with re plastering.
    * mend the broken drainpipes until money saved to replace the lot.

I could go on and on but I would be here forever.

I will be back, possibly covered in tar. I apologise for the waffle but I just need to organise my thoughts.

    Right, curtains then breakfast.

    Have a good day all.

  • I'm so impressed by your DIY and your lists. Having suffered dreadfully and financially over the years due to damp related issues, can I suggest you mend drainpipes after you do the roof. Also, have a think about your ideal kitchen pre rewiring. That way you'll be able to get wall sockets and lights sited.

When ours broke, we found it was covered by the buildings insurance (being a fixture or fitting, I forget which). It was an older suite so we could only find a hugely expensive one at a reclamation place, but sent the costings to the insurance company who were fine with them. We then used the money to buy an entire new suite as the old one wasn't what we'd have chosen anyway!

Just thought I'd mention it in case it might save you money too. :)

Oh thank you cherry. I never thought of that. It's strange how I have insurance but it never goes through my mind to see if I can claim. I will give them a call.

Yes your right INOD, thanks. I have one along the roofline which I fixed years ago ('twas a bit scary up there) but the repair has now failed which has caused the problems with the bay roof. The other downpipe which was knocked off by the old window cleaner I can do myself. I just need one part which I can get later. I should have got it at bee and que earlier but never thought. :o

Well the bay roof is now sorted. It will need doing professionally but the repair should be good for a few years whatever. I will now start a savings pot to get it done next spring. It was funny how many local neighbours (male) came out and started to explain what I needed to do. I explained back at them that I had done the same repair 14 years ago so I think I can manage. I tell you what though, the years have been unkind. Getting onto the wall to step onto the leader was a struggle and jumping off the wall was worse. I'm getting so old.:rotfl

A bit of lunch I think and then I'm going to sort out the cuts in rail thingy.

I'm really enjoying today. I love pottering and the sun has come out too.:)
