To be honest when selling anything to strangers i won't hold anything for anyone unless they give me a substation deposit that they agree they'll lose if they don't follow through.

Otherwise, who ever pays me first gets it. If someone expresses an interest and says they'll come and collect it on X date, without a deposit i'd still be willing to sell it to someone else.

Blimey your a tough cookie! you only take payment in copper cabling? ;)

Never, ever, rely on promises. Tell whoever phones or Emails that you will need a deposit, or you will continue to advertise it. First come, first served. I always say to potential buyers of anything.

That guy sounds like the original tyre-kicking timewaster, there are lots of them. I had someone come to see a PC I had for sale, he saw it working, said he wanted it and I asked him for a deposit. Heard no more, sold it to the next caller. Original guy came back two weeks later and was angry that I sold it.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
  • I never understand why people seem to have so many problems selling used cars privately. I sell all mine via eBay and AutoTrader and apart from all the inevitable 'Innit bruv I pay u £500squids 2moz' emails which can be ignored, I never have any tyre kickers or time wasters to speak of.

Probably because of the adverts I write, I suspect.

Ive had all sorts. £100 offers. People moaning its a bit scratched - its 15 years old. People asking me how much insurance costs.

One woman turned up and said she wanted a merc but didnt want to pay this much for one - £700. Not sure what she expected to get.

Yep. I just find it weird that this guy knows I know his mobile no, where he works, where he lives roughly and is just blanking me now. I even text him and asked him - he could have just text back and said sorry dont want any more. He didnt even have to speak to me.

I wouldnt do this because A) I believe in treating people properly and B) Like I said, all it takes is peeing off the wrong nutter and you've got a load of hassle.

Bear in mind this guy had a load of printouts on the car such as HPI check that he'd obviously used his employers resources to obtain. And then hes telling me he'd get the mot done for free at work as well as getting a few spare parts (seat control broken) "on the side" through business account. If I wanted I could point out to his employer what he was up to....

Don't have much else useful to add. I have sold a number of cars, every time so far no pain (the most expensive was £7300, got cash for this one, checked the banknotes one by one under UV light, job done). When I sold the last car (the Toyota IQ) the pair paid by bank transfer, with an initial deposit).

The rule is for me: pay a deposit if you like the car, otherwise for me the message is that you are not actually interested.
  • Classic timewaster, don't waste another second of your life on the twerp.
Business mgr at a main dealer has the pick of dozens of trade ins and inside the trade deals and swaps, so why is he messing about looking at general cars for £700?, because he's a classic timewaster and this is what he does, why is anyone's guess, maybe his significant other can't stand the sight of him and he has no fiends, understandably.

True enough. Surely he'd be able to get something else like you said.

Maybe one day he will pee off the wrong person who will take offence and march into his showroom....

Gotta be fair he seemed genuine. Showed up with HPI check and background checks he'd obviously run in work. Had quick look started the engine and seemed decent enough.

I've had so many people come out to look to then spend 10 minutes looking at a scratch on the door shaking their heads, it was a pleasant surprise for someone to show up, not make a song and dance and realise what you can get for £700.

Gave me his business card etc so bit of shock that hes 'ghosted' me now. Like I said, if he was too gutless to speak to me why didnt he just respond to text says sorry changed mind.

I've since had another timewaster. Young lady - dead keen. Got to my place via taxi - from about 6-7 miles away. Wanted the car but had to check with husb. Next day - sorry I've got an overseas driving licence and insurance is way too expensive (its a 1.6).

Why not save everyones time (and £25 of your own taxi money!) by checking the practicalities out BEFORE visiting????

This is why companies such as We Buy Any Car are thriving - you cut out the retards who want a warranty on a 15 year old car and demand refunds when the electric window stops working 3 months after the sale.
