Grr selling car privately

Been a complete nightmare. £700 for 15 year old car.

After weeks of timewasters guy shows up. Works as business manager for a vauxhall dealer. Takes a look - yes I'll have. Great. Sorry no money on me for deposit but I'll be back tomorrow.

Says ok I'll pop in tomorrow at 6pm (this was sunday). Great.
Phones monday. Banks closed tomorrow ok same time. Yes no problem.

6pm yesterday No sign. I've rung him, text him, no sign off. Looks like hes changed his mind.

Really not happy. I've had about 5 people phone and I've told them its sold.

Morale of the story - trust no !!!!!! and take a deposit.

  • It's not sold until you've got the money in your hand and they've driven off into the sunset.

Lesson learnt. Take a deposit. Never assume people are going to act decently.

Looks like the guy is so gutless he wont even answer my calls to tell me hes changed his mind.

Stupid thing is he gave me his business card and he works in a car dealer. Not clever acting like this. Upset the wrong person and you could have some nutter showing up at the showroom and kicking off.

To be honest when selling anything to strangers i won't hold anything for anyone unless they give me a substation deposit that they agree they'll lose if they don't follow through.

Otherwise, who ever pays me first gets it. If someone expresses an interest and says they'll come and collect it on X date, without a deposit i'd still be willing to sell it to someone else.

I'd have been questioning why a business manager working for Vauxhall would be interested in a £700 15 year old car.

    Exactly.

He might have been the Business Manager but has now left, hence the need for cheap wheels instead of using whichever Demo model is available.

Said for his wife. BUT car was cheap so Im wondering if he plans to sell it on the side. He already admitted he could get mot and other stuff sorted for free...
  • If anybody says they will come back, just ask them to phone first in case you have sold it.

    No deposit no hold.

I never understand why people seem to have so many problems selling used cars privately. I sell all mine via eBay and AutoTrader and apart from all the inevitable 'Innit bruv I pay u £500squids 2moz' emails which can be ignored, I never have any tyre kickers or time wasters to speak of.

Probably because of the adverts I write, I suspect.
