GDP has little real meaning. Totally misused these days. A meaningless measure to the man or woman in the street. As no bearing on whether there employer can afford higher wages for example. Shame there's not more focus on the current account deficit. Which is a far better indicator of the UK's declining wealth.
Well said! You could boost the GDP by everyone taking in each other's washing but it wouldn't create any wealth for the UK. The elephant in the room is the balance of payments deficit which is ever increasing and only slightly staunched by the continual selling off the UK family silver to foreign oligarchs.

Right - now, there is footage of Boris Johnson explaining passionately why UK should remain in EU - he thinks the economy will be stronger, immigrants are good for UK and thinks its wrong that Turkey should not be allowed , all the points he's turned upside down to support his leave campaign now:

Surely, people have to be aware of this and question how they can trust this campaign? I really don't see how someone that for so many years can talk up the benefits of staying in EU consistently, and then have a sudden change of heart.

They're just a bunch of dodgy chancers, all wealthy enough to weather the inevitable storm, it's the sink estate EDL types voting for brexit on a wing and a prayer that will suffer. Of course they'll just blame it all on immigrants, the EU and after that, anyone else they see fit to blame.
The way the NHS was used in this campaign to bludgeon the unthinking masses exposed the brexit hypocrisy in all it's cynical glory, since the four horsemen leading that campaign would all sell it off to the highest bidder at the first opportunity.

Absolutely. It's like the leave campaign's use of the false £350 million / week figure.

If you have to mislead people to make your point, that should set alarm bells ringing.

What a picture you paint. I took early retirement due to ill health, having worked as a Medical Research Scientist for many years. I find your reference to sink estates and the EDL quite offensive. It might surprise you to know that some of the people voting to Exit have more than 2 GCSE's - some of us have more than 2 degrees.

Accepted, not all EDL types are uneducated or live on sink estates.

With respect, the hit to GDP starts when people stop investing and when people slow down their spending. If you do not believe that this has already happened in contemplation of a possible Brexit you are disagreeing with the main argument of the remainers and all of the economists they claim supports them.

    Jeff

If we stay in, companies have certainty, at least for the next few years until the EU goes pop, or whatever. If we leave, companies have years of uncertainty, which makes it hard to plan future investments e.g. new offices.

I happen to believe that the short term loss in GDP will be compensated by an improved future. The EU is becoming more and more political, and we will have a large socialist super state.

And the in campaign paint a picture of future wars and economic collapse if we leave. I wish I was selling alarm bells, they are currently in high demand. :)

Well, I agree that that message would be going too far. It would be more accurate to say as Martin Lewis has said, “On balance of probability, it is more likely we’ll have less money in our pockets if we vote to leave”.
