a paramedic is not a motoring journo, mechanic, or accident investigator.

I believe the ford ka is safe, it just has a high percentage of bad drivers.

ie. young kids that have been bought one by mummy, low mileage drivers, and low-confidence drivers.

    Hiya

Have only just stumbled upon this thread and don't know if it's the sort of thing you can help with - eveyone else seems to be looking to spend much more money than me!

Bit of background, DD1 is coming up 17 and as I have a Alhambra and OH drives an automatic, if she is going to have any practice outsie driving lessons she needs to buy a little runaround.

I am of the opinion that she should spend up to £1.5k so that she can insure it TPFT only and her criteria is that it's black (VERY important  ) and cheap to run and insure. Her preferred cars are Renault Clio's (S reg onwards) or Peugeot 206's. She did want a KA but someone has put us off these saying they aren't that safe in an accident (and he was a paramedic) .

We live about 25 mins from Blackbushe and I naively assumed I could just log on to the site and search but it seems I need to spend money or set myself up as a car trader lol!

Can I just say in advance that I promise to thank everyone who can give me any advice and will let you know what happens - ideally we'd like to buy within the next two - three weeks.

    Thanks in advance.

    Amanda

As a regular patron of Blackbushe and having bought hundreds of cars from there I would vouch for the safety of buying from there, if you turn up on the day (best being Friday) you will indeed have to buy brochures which could cost up to £8, a bit steep but at least you get a full description of each car, though there is a disclaimer! I would suggest that you try and stick to the main sellers there i.e., Lex, Inchcape, Hitachi, LloydsTsb, Motorbility as they are there every week and have built up a solid reputation for supplying a range of cars most with history etc.

My advice would be something like Polo 1.0 (very solid and reliable, and good resale) or a Corsa cheap to maintain. If you are going to buy from auction make sure you check bodywork and tyres and ensure that the car has at least 6 months mot, and try to avoid multiple owners, but most importantly only buy a car where the mileage is warranted, this will say on the catalogue and be announced by the auctioneer. Always listen clearly to the auctioneer they are sometimes difficult to understand and don’t stand at the front with your catalogue and parkers guide as they will know you are not trade and if you appear too eager they will run you (ie take a bid from themselves in order that you keep bidding up).
To summarize as long as you prepare by checking over any potential cars and setting a figure you are prepared to go to and sticking to it you should enjoy the experience, for £1500 you should get at least v/w reg with circa 60,000 miles I would avoid Clio but 206 is good and the cars already mentioned, remember you will pay an indemnity fee and buyers fee which will be added to the price, alternatively look in local ads or internet often buying private is a good option although you may need to travel, I hope I have helped good luck and happy hunting, it really isn’t as daunting at BCA as you may think most of the staff there are friendly and helpful.

I think you should read posts #8 & #39 in this thread, 39 is long winded but important.

So lets decide on a model to look for
    Peugeot 1.1 206 3dr & 5dr

Here is what is currently at blackbushe

PEUGEOT 206 1.1 S Hatchback, BLACK, 3 Doors, Manual Transmission, Petrol,
    Registered 12-04-2005
    Blackbushe 18-07-2008

    Avg:£3380 30K 10+
    New:£8277
    Ret:£5085
    Trd:£3985
*Not a good example as we don't know the mileage

PEUGEOT 206 1.1 STYLE Hatchback, GREY, 3 Doors, Manual Transmission, Petrol, 39428 Miles, CW52 FBN
    Registered 18-12-2002
    Blackbushe 11-07-2008
    LEX002
    New:£7345
    Ret:£2995
    Cln:£2125
    Avg:£1925

Taking this second example we have a 40K 1.1 3dr 206 for an approx bid price of £2100 - £2200,
    fees ontop = £25 & £214
    extra costs = tax disc 148 g/CO2 = £120
    total cost £2,500
Negatives, no time to test the car thouroughly.

Similar cars on autotrader - BTW the distances are from Blackbushe

I know it's a "look" but look at the price. Small dent on wing, but that's no big deal, 4 months MOT (ask for it to be renewed & road tax) and probably tax is not included. £2000
    http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/PEUGEOT+206/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-69-109-240-4294967112-4294967204/advert.action?R=200826313123975&distance=92&postcode=GU17+9LQ+&channel=CARS&make=PEUGEOT&model=206&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

Ask if this one is a '52, in anycase it is an LX and a good price, 4 months tax & 1 year MOT - 48K £2000
    http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/PEUGEOT+206/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-69-109-240-4294967112-4294967204/advert.action?R=200826313005065&distance=175&postcode=GU17+9LQ+&channel=CARS&make=PEUGEOT&model=206&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

And this one, also need to check the '02 or '52 or '51 (WHY DON"T THEY PUT THIS IN THE AD!!!!) but it is an LX with less miles 32K (than the auction one), and 4 months tax, 10 months MOT - £2400
    http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/PEUGEOT+206/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-69-109-240-4294967112-4294967204/advert.action?R=200827313335534&distance=161&postcode=GU17+9LQ+&channel=CARS&make=PEUGEOT&model=206&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=

    So what am I saying?
    I'm saying................
    1. You should decide what car you want
    2. You should see on autotrader what is available
    3. You ask in this thread if there is one at Blackbushe
    4. You compare the prices
    5. You might very well decide it's better to buy privately.

    Regarding your Mazda MX5

I can tell you that you that the only recent price average they have for a car closely matching yours is this one

    MAZDA MX-5 1.8 SPORT Roadster, 2 Doors, Manual Transmission, Petrol, 2003 03
    Avg:£6075 @ 54K - 3 sold recently
    New:£17815
    Ret:£7350
    Cln:£5925

You see the red price, closely matches the blue price... the blue price is the book price.

Your car is a bit old for there to be any auction data for it. But I expect the price is about £3400 You can phone up a BCA branch and ask for someone to give you a book value. Then if it sells you will have to pay sellers fee.

£3,400?? ouch! ok thanks v much for that Wig...will try classified ads...yet again:rolleyes2

I have looked at what has been through BCA in the last month and the only samples there for MX5 are 3 x 03 plates which went for £6,000 average. Your car is good news in that it has low mileage, good colour and a hard-top and also the best of the small roadsters as I am sure you found when you bought it!! Having sought the opinion of some Mazda guys in the trade I believe the car could make £5,000 plus if the right buyers are there, but be quick as the season is nearly over believe it or not I am being told that unless cabs come in over the next 2 weeks the price changes dramatically. Personally with the rarity of your car I would try e-bay as most auctions are at bursting point with cars, but good luck you do have a saleable car!
