When we separated before and I left the house I never walked in, I always knocked and waited

    Hopefully he'll do the same.

I have wanted a chain anyway as we have a new lock so I may go ahead and do that, he can come and go as he pleases for things when I'm at work I would just like some warning when I am in

I don't see why you can't leave your key it the lock - or the inside.......

When you are home simply keep the door locked with the key in.. you are not denying him access just putting it on your terms.

Not a lot you can do when you are out though.

When mine eventually left he would come in while I was out and steal my stuff.. I had school runs and college so my routine was very predictable.

This was the reason I agreed to him not paying maintenance for 2 years and signed the house deeds over to me.

The mortgage being in both names is irrelevant it is the deeds that are important... we still have the joint mortgage but the house is legally owned solely by me so he cant just waltz in.

I'd not bother with a chain.. one swift kick they snap anyway.

Our son snapped the key in the lick and they replaced the whole part with a unit with a latch you turn on the inside so there's no key hole on the inside which I don't like anyway tbh

No reason you can't change the locks and give him a key - tell him you were worried because you lost your keys in town so needed to change the locks to feel safe.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

I would be very surprised if he could just march in , it is his house but it is your home, do a search. I have a feeling just turning up when you do not want him here may get him an injunction order (forbid entry altogether ) if you complain , check how to and who to
The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.

An injunction order would only be successful if there is domestic violence whether that be physical or emotional in the relationship.

The court will apply a "balance of harm" test to the case to see if it's going to achieve the best outcome.

Excluding him from his house most probably won't happen if he's not an abusive person.

    It's also very expensive.

So whilst the words "just march in" may sound like he can just come in whenever he pleases the OP also has the right to put the chain on the door whenever she's in, which would require him to knock and wait. The OP must still let him in though.

I changed my locks when mine left me, he got angry and cut my phone and TV wires, but it stopped him coming in and out whenever he felt the need. In my case I did it to protect me, I used to get upset each time I got home and he'd taken more things from the house to furnish his new love nest.
