As far as the future-proofing goes, I went through an exercise of updating my systems to Windows 10 and then reverting; thus if there is a compelling reason to move at some point my machines will be registered with their digital entitlement.

As it stands right now, Windows 10 is certainly better than 8, but nothing makes me want to use it more than Windows 7. I do have a Microsoft tablet which came with Windows 10 on it, but I find the touch interface very cumbersome.

So me, I'll stick with Windows 7 if I choose too, but I've future-proofed too.

I've had Win 7 on my puter for 7 years, I like it! I've never felt the need to change, it does exactly what I want & it's extremely stable.

I've never even looked at Win 10 to see what I'm missing ;)

Yeah I'm thinking of doing that - keeps your options open.

I swapped my hard disk to do it, so I kept the installation I was reverting to as-is.

I tried Win10 and liked it well enough.

My update though ran into the Cortana and/ unresponsive Start button fault which is common, can recur at any time and afaik hasn't been resolved yet by Microsoft.

Since I'm happy with Win 8.1 I reverted and no plans to upgrade any more. I'm not interested in a faulty product even if it is free.

You could try the start menu troubleshooter, as that worked for me. Think it is a recent addition. 3rd entry down on the link below:

So, the latest trick is that you get a dialog box prompting you to upgrade to Windows 10, but there isn't a "No" button and if you close the dialog by clicking in the window's Close box (red cross) it goes ahead and does the upgrade.

Had 3 friends running Windows 7 contact me last weekend asking me why their computers had "upgraded" to 10 when they didn't ask for it. Told them how to roll it back to 7 if they wanted. One already has, another is about to because the software he uses doesn't work under 10. The third is living with it after I got his scanner working again. I'm sure MS will count all 3 as registered users of 10...

Oh yes, MS will include them.
That is which they use such weasel words as the phrase "activated devices" rather than active users of Win10.
We will probably find that they are also including new computers not yet sold and OEM licences issued to system builders but not yet installed in the figures as well.

That's nothing new ... I'm fairly sure they've always done that for any of their OS releases - this is nothing unique to W10.
