Mortgage refused due to incorrect credit information.

This week we had a mortgage application with Santander refused. We were told it was due to my wife's credit score.
Six years ago we received letters from John Lewis and debt collection agencies chasing debt for someone with a similar name to my wife, different dob and address. We checked her credit score with Experian and there were tons of accounts in this other person name showing on her account. After some time we were able to correct this and alerted John Lewis. There were no further problems with anyone chasing us.
For the last four years we have been paying Experian Credit the monthly subscription in order to make sure this didn't happen again, knowing that we would be moving house and applying for a mortgage in the future. During this four year period nothing has shown on the credit score that wasn't right, we assumed that everything was ok.
It wasn't ok, Santader carried out a credit check and were told that my wife was linked to an address not known to us. This address belonged to the same person as before, and there was now a CCJ. Santander refused the mortgage application as my wife's Experian account was saying that she had a CCJ in her name??? However, this was not shown on her account when we check it.
We opened accounts for both Eqifax and CallCredit to see what they showed. Both showed details of the CCJ. Experian had failed to share this information with us for four years and will be solely responsible for losing us a house.
We are six weeks away from completing on our new house, but now we are in danger on losing It. All of the three main credit score companies have been contacted and say that it might take up to a month to investigate the matter, we don't have this time.
We drove to Northampton County Court, and the Kings Lynn County Court and got a copy of the CCJ which clearly shows a different name and address to that of my wife's. However, all three credit score companies continue to show incorrect information that is preventing us from getting a mortgage, and will be responsible for us losing our house.
Our priority is to get our mortgage application through, and after this we will pursue a complaint with Experian.
Does anyone know how we can get the credit report corrected quickly? Has anyone had this happen to them? If so how did you get a mortgage?
Please help as we are at breaking point.
Regards,
Chris.

You have clear evidence that the CCJ and adverse report do not relate to your wife. You need to place this evidence before the Santander underwriters, since they are the people who make the decision.0

We will do this asap, but I'm worried about how long it will take.
Thank you.0 -

Who did you contact to get this information corrected with? Did you contact Experian to get this done or did you contact all the individual companies that the 'tons of accounts' were with? For the last four years we have been paying Experian Credit the monthly subscription in order to make sure this didn't happen again, knowing that we would be moving house and applying for a mortgage in the future. Stop paying a subscription, it's a waste of money. Apply for your statutory report for £2 every few months.
Did they actually say 'Experian' or did they say 'Credit Report'?Santander refused the mortgage application as my wife's Experian account was saying that she had a CCJ in her name??? I hope these are either free trials or done through Clearscore for Equifax and Noddle for Call Credit. Both alternatives are free.We are six weeks away from completing on our new house, but now we are in danger on losing It. As advised present the evidence to ALL 3 CRAs to support their investigation. They are not known to be the quickest at sorting errors out, so keep at it with them all.
I hope it all works out for you.

Something like this happened to me, once. I paid off a loan early, having received a figure to settle, hence saving myself all of about £90 but the stupid credit record had it down as a default! I contacted the loan company, who checked, told me it was a clerical error on their part and that they would remove this slur on my credit history and send me proof the loan had been repaid in full. This they did, within a week or two, I believe. I let them know they had nearly lost us a mortgage... had I known then what I know now, I would have demanded compensation but the idiots would probably have put that down as a default as well.
I realise it is probably not possible for you to take this route with loads of accounts but do you think it might be worth mentioning you have raised this on MSE? Might just light a fire under the relevant, collective butts, you never know. HTH.0 -

With no mortgage offer in place. Little point in setting a completion date.0 -

Six years ago we contacted all of the individual companies and Experian in order to remove the information. This time we are using the free trial period to see the other credit reports. Santander have confirmed that they use Experian, so we know it's their fault. Thanks for the advice.0 -
Everything is on hold at the moment. Depending on people's good will and patience while we sort this.0

They do for current accounts, but look at this link, MSE, updated in March this year. They actually use all 3 CRAs for mortgages.
I would suspect this is where the root of your problem lies, given that the information was only corrected on one of the 3 CRAs.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Budgeting & Bank Accounts, Credit Cards, Credit File & Ratings and Energy boards. Good luck but expect to get nowhere. My OH has the same problem and the companies refuse to move the erroneous data and the credit reference agency says they go on the advice of the company. Point out the Data Protection Act if you like but it won't help. I genuinely feel sorry for you as my OH has been battling this constantly for years0
-
Oh and ours even went to the ICO to investigate due to the breaches in the data protection act etc and they said as long as the companies weren't chasing us incorrectly then they couldn't (wouldn't) do anything. I suggested taking it to our MP but after years of this the OH has just left it cos they can't be bothered to keep fighting brick walls0
