Very helpful tks. The arrangement is that both meters will be upgraded but that the gas one wiĺl remain in manual mode. Does this affect what you have written at all?
Taking pics as you have suggested strikes me as common sense in the circs.

Why have the gas meter in "manual mode"? It doesn't make any sense...

Sounds like the most difficult part is to learn a new set of tec jargon: HAN, IHD, GSME, ESME, DCC .... all gibberish to me up to now

I intend to switch gas away from Octopus and there is no financal advantage in having a TOU gas tariff

Hard to say as I don't think anyone has ever defined what 'manual mode' means...
The gas meter will function as a gas meter even if not connected to the comms hub so if that is what they plan to do you would expect the 'gas' light on the comms hub to remain off and not flash every 5 seconds.
If they intend to commission the gas meter fully but not collect data from it then my original comment stands and the 'gas' light on the comms hub should be flashing every 5 seconds.
I would guess that it should be fully commissioned or it would have no way to flag a fault such as a low battery.

There are no TOU gas tariffs, AFAIK. Why would having a smart gas meter be any disadvantage to you switching to somebody else?

It is more a matter of there not being any advantage. Other things being equal I would prefer a dumb meter in principle. Also you get the impression from reading the various posts that switching etc problems tend to be more common with smart meters than without. The "somebody else" may in future not be as happy with smart technology as Octopus appears to be.

The problem that occurs with switching smart meters (which is more of a historic problem really), is that the meter ends up being a dumb meter. You are essentially requesting that this problem is configured into your meter in advance.

Not mentioning the confusion that it may cause to the new gas supplier when they see that it's a smart meter but not reporting to the DCC.

If the new gas supplier is happy with the arrangement and pre-warned it should not be vastly different if he was getting an old-style manual  readings feed instead.
The dumb setup can be configured into the new meter from the start but I understand that there is nothing to prevent it being switched into smart mode at some later stage if required. A second fitter's visit would be required but the work would have already been half done.
