I can appreciate that for some people "accessibility" could be a major factor in choice of smart or dumb technology. I am not particularly fussed myself.
In present circumstances I can see more logic in comparing (gas) fixed tariffs than variable tariffs ("my yo-yo is better than yours"). Just one month's price stability in summer should not make a huge difference. But as someone pointed out, taking account of the level of standing charges which have a greater impact in summer months when consumption is normally low.
Interesting to see what choices forumites have come to in balancing all these factors ...Telegraph Sam

I made the decision a couple of months ago to swallow a high standing charge in favour of locking in a low unit rate for the winter. I'll pay £10-15 extra in the short term, but save £50+ over 12 months.Telegraph_Sam said:Interesting to see what choices forumites have come to in balancing all these factors ...

Logic in that but I am taking a short term view covering the summer months rather than the whole year. I think with Octopus you have to opt for 24 months fixed - but of course with no exit penalty. If I could find something fixed but no more expensive than Tracker gas I could be tempted.Telegraph Sam

If I did that I'd now be saving £10-15 between May-September, but I would then have to pay at least £65 extra between October-April because the tariff I'm currently on has already been replaced with a more expensive version.Telegraph_Sam said:Logic in that but I am taking a short term view covering the summer months rather than the whole year. Octopus Go Faster. I know you're talking about gas here, but exactly the same logic applies given my heating is electric.Telegraph_Sam said:Who did you opt for?

As this forum is supposed to be for reviews about Octopus as a supplier, is it not time for a separate thread on non Octopus-related subjects?0
